Squarespace to Shopify migration
Squarespace is a genuinely good website builder that also sells things. Once selling becomes the point rather than a feature, the ceiling arrives quickly.
Brands we build and scale
The redirect map is written before any data moves.
Every URL changes when you leave Squarespace. That is not a detail to handle at the end β it is the single thing that decides whether the organic traffic you have spent years earning arrives on the new store or disappears.
So the URL map comes first: every old path matched to its new equivalent, reviewed against Search Console and your top landing pages, and shipped as 301s with the launch rather than patched in afterwards. Titles and meta descriptions carry across, internal linking is rebuilt, and we watch Search Console closely for the weeks that follow.
Done that way, rankings dip briefly and recover. Done without a map, they do not come back on their own β and by the time it is obvious, the old store is gone and the evidence with it.
What sends brands off Squarespace
Commerce became the business
Squarespace commerce is an add-on to a website product. Shopify is built around the catalogue and the checkout, and it shows once volume matters.
Inventory and variants
Bundles, complex variants and real inventory management across locations are where brands usually hit the wall.
The app gap
Subscriptions, loyalty, advanced reviews, 3PL and ERP integrations β the ecosystem difference is large and specifically about ecommerce.
Selling internationally
Multi-currency and per-market pricing are native to Shopify Markets and limited on Squarespace.
What actually breaks
Every migration page on the internet lists what moves across. These are the things that do not, and they are what decides whether the project goes well. We would rather you read them now than discover them at launch.
The design
Squarespace templates do not transfer. This is a rebuild, and for most brands moving for commercial reasons that is the intent.
Export completeness
Squarespace's export is limited. Some data comes through the API and some needs reconstructing β we audit what is genuinely retrievable before quoting.
Member areas and scheduling
No direct Shopify equivalent. If those are core, keeping Squarespace for them and moving only the store can be the right split.
URLs
Structures differ, so everything needs a 301. Squarespace URLs are usually shallow, which makes the map simpler than most.
How the migration runs
Scope and audit
We go through the Squarespace store properly β catalogue, customisation, integrations, and anything platform-specific that will need a Shopify equivalent. You get the list before you get a quote.
URL map and 301 plan
Written and reviewed before any data moves, against your actual traffic rather than a generic pattern.
Data migration
Products, variants, customers, orders and content, into a staging store you can check against the live one.
Build and rebuild
Theme, the Shopify equivalents of whatever the old platform did natively, and the integrations you actually use.
Launch
DNS, redirects live with it, and analytics and Search Console verified on the new property the same day.
Watch
Crawl and ranking monitoring for the weeks after, because that is when a missed redirect shows up and when it is still cheap to fix.
Questions we get every week
Is Squarespace bad for ecommerce?
No β it is good for a certain size and shape of it. A small, stable catalogue attached to a beautiful site whose main job is something else is a perfectly sensible use of Squarespace, and cheaper than Shopify. The problem is ceiling, not quality. Brands hit it when the catalogue grows, inventory gets real, or paid acquisition starts and checkout conversion suddenly matters.
How much of our data can you actually move?
Products, variants, images, customers and blog content move reliably. Order history depends on what Squarespace will export for your plan, and we check that before quoting rather than promising it. Anything that cannot be moved cleanly, we will tell you about up front.
Can we keep the Squarespace design?
Not directly β templates do not transfer between the platforms. We can rebuild the look on Shopify closely if you want continuity, or treat it as the redesign most brands are ready for by the time they migrate. Either is fine; it just needs deciding at scoping so it is in the quote.
Will our rankings survive?
Yes with a proper plan. Squarespace URL structures are usually shallow and map cleanly, which makes this one of the more forgiving migrations for SEO. We build the URL map first, 301 everything, carry across metadata and monitor Search Console for the weeks after.

Send us your store URL. You will get a written assessment of what moves cleanly, what needs rebuilding, and whether the migration is worth it at all β we will tell you if it is not.
