Shopify agency for Canadian brands

Shopify is a Canadian company and Canadian brands still lose orders on the two things it cannot solve for you: provincial tax that changes at every border, and a Quebec market that legally expects French. We build stores that handle both, and sell south into the US properly.

Why Thriftizer

Provincial tax and Quebec French are where Canadian stores actually break.

Canadian sales tax is not one rate. It is 5% GST federally, HST in Ontario and the Atlantic provinces at rates that differ between them, and GST plus a separate PST or QST in BC, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec. Shopify can calculate this, but only once it is configured correctly and your registration numbers are in place — and misconfiguration surfaces as either undercharged tax you eat or overcharged tax that generates complaints.

Quebec is a separate problem. Under Quebec's language legislation, commercial content directed at Quebec consumers is expected to be available in French, and the requirements around trademarks and product descriptions have tightened. A store selling into Quebec on an English-only site is carrying a risk most founders have not priced.

The upside case is cross-border. The US market is ten times the size and sits next door, but shipping into it means duty thresholds, customs documentation, USD pricing that does not look like a bad exchange-rate conversion, and a returns path that does not cost more than the order.

FAQ

Questions we get every week

Can you set up GST, HST and PST correctly?

Yes, and it is worth getting right at build time rather than after a reconciliation problem. Canada has 5% federal GST, HST in Ontario and the Atlantic provinces at rates that differ between them, and GST plus a separate provincial tax in BC, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec. Shopify handles the calculation once it is configured with your registration numbers and the right per-province rules — misconfiguration means either undercharging and absorbing the difference, or overcharging and dealing with complaints.

Do we legally need a French version of our store?

If you sell to consumers in Quebec, you should assume yes. Quebec's language legislation expects commercial content directed at Quebec consumers to be available in French, and recent amendments tightened the requirements around product descriptions and trademarks. We build genuine bilingual storefronts — product content, checkout, transactional emails and policy pages — rather than a machine-translation overlay, which is both a poor experience and a weak compliance position. For the specific legal question, talk to a Quebec lawyer; we will build to whatever standard you are advised to meet.

Can you help us sell into the United States?

Yes, and for most Canadian brands it is the biggest growth lever available. We set up USD pricing through Shopify Markets with sensible rounding rather than raw exchange-rate conversion, configure US shipping rates and duty handling against the current de minimis threshold, add HS codes to your catalogue for customs, and set up a returns path that does not cost more than the order value. Getting the returns economics right is what usually decides whether US selling is profitable.

Do you work in Canadian business hours?

Our team is in India, which gives a morning overlap with Eastern Time — our evening is your morning. We agree a fixed daily overlap window at onboarding. Most Canadian clients run async updates on a shared board with one or two scheduled calls a week, which works well across that gap.

What does a Shopify store cost in Canada?

We quote fixed-scope in your local currency after a short call, and our rates run well below equivalent local agencies — the difference is where our team sits, not the tier of partner you are hiring. Send us your brief and you will have a written figure within a business day.

Shopify is Canadian. Do we need an agency at all?

Not always, and we will say so. If you are launching a first store on a stock theme with a simple catalogue, Shopify's own tooling plus your time will get you there. An agency earns its fee when the configuration is genuinely complex — multi-province tax, bilingual content, cross-border US selling — or when the store is your primary revenue channel and you cannot afford it to be the thing you learn on.
