Shopify speed optimization that survives your design
Most speed 'fixes' are a checklist run against your theme that breaks something and moves the score four points. We audit what is actually costing you — usually apps you forgot you installed and images nobody compressed — and fix it without taking your store apart.
Brands we build and scale

Your PageSpeed score is not the problem. Your LCP on a real phone is.
Lighthouse runs on a simulated device with a cold cache and no third-party scripts blocked. It is a useful diagnostic and a terrible target. What actually affects revenue is field data — the Core Web Vitals Google records from real Chrome users on your store, which is what feeds the page experience signal and what your customers actually experience on a mid-range Android on 4G.
In practice, three things account for most of the damage on a Shopify store. Apps that inject render-blocking scripts on every page whether you use them there or not. Hero and product images served at 3000px into a 400px slot. And a theme that loads its entire JavaScript bundle before anything paints.
None of those need a rebuild. They need someone to open the network waterfall, find what is blocking, and remove it carefully enough that the site still works afterwards. That is the whole job.
Where Shopify stores actually lose seconds
Ranked roughly by how often they turn out to be the main culprit in our audits.
App script bloat
Review apps, popups, chat widgets, upsell tools and analytics all injecting scripts sitewide. We measure each one's cost and scope it to the pages that need it — or remove it.
Unoptimised images
Oversized hero and product images are the single most common LCP killer. We set up responsive sizing, modern formats and lazy loading that does not break the fold.
Render-blocking JavaScript
Theme bundles that load everything before first paint. We defer, split and inline what is genuinely critical.
Font loading
Custom fonts blocking text render, or swapping so late the layout jumps. Fixed with preloading and sensible display strategy.
Layout shift (CLS)
Images and embeds without reserved space, banners that inject after paint. Cheap to fix and immediately visible to users.
Interaction delay (INP)
Buttons that feel dead for half a second because the main thread is busy. Usually an app script, occasionally the theme.
How a speed engagement runs
Measure
Field Core Web Vitals from real users plus lab traces, so we optimise what your customers experience rather than what a simulator reports.
Diagnose
Network waterfall and main-thread analysis to identify what is actually blocking, ranked by impact rather than by checklist order.
Fix
Theme and asset work on a duplicate theme, tested against your real catalogue — never edits published straight to your live store.
Verify
Re-measure, publish, then watch Search Console for 28 days as the field data catches up to the change.
What speed optimisation costs
Quoted after the free audit, so you see exactly what is wrong and what it costs to fix before committing to anything.
Image pipeline, app audit and the top blocking issues. Right for most stores and where the biggest gains usually are.
Deep theme surgery, critical CSS, script splitting, third-party consolidation and CLS/INP work across templates.
Monthly monitoring so newly installed apps and seasonal campaigns do not quietly undo the work.
Speed work almost always pays for itself twice: once in conversion rate, once in reduced ad cost from better landing page experience. We measure both.
Questions we get every week
Will optimising speed break my store's design?
No — that is the constraint we work under, not a trade-off we ask you to make. Everything is built and tested on a duplicate theme against your real catalogue before anything is published. If a change genuinely requires a visual compromise, we bring you the trade-off rather than making the call for you. The 'strip everything and score 100' approach is easy and usually costs more in conversion than it gains in speed.
Do I need this if my PageSpeed score is already green?
Possibly not, but check the right number first. Lighthouse is a lab simulation; what matters for both rankings and revenue is the Core Web Vitals field data from real Chrome users, which you can see in Search Console. Plenty of stores score well in the lab and fail the field assessment — especially image-heavy catalogues where the lab test happens to load a light page.
How much faster will my store actually get?
It depends entirely on what is wrong, which is why the audit is free and comes first. Stores carrying heavy app bloat and unoptimised images typically see the largest gains, because those problems are both severe and straightforward to fix. A store that is already lean has less headroom. We will tell you honestly if there is not much to win — a small win is not worth a large invoice.
Does site speed actually affect Google rankings?
It is a real but modest ranking signal — Core Web Vitals feed Google's page experience assessment, and it acts more as a tiebreaker between comparable results than as a primary factor. The larger commercial effect is on conversion rate and on ad quality scores, both of which respond to speed more directly than rankings do. We would not sell a speed engagement purely as an SEO play.
Can you speed up a store you did not build?
Yes, and most of our speed work is on stores built elsewhere. We work with whatever theme you are on, including heavily customised and older Online Store 1.0 themes. If the theme is genuinely beyond economic repair we will say so and quote the alternative rather than billing you for incremental fixes on a lost cause.
What happens when we install a new app later?
It can undo some of the work, which is why we offer ongoing monitoring. At minimum we hand over documentation of what was changed and what to watch for, so your team can check the impact before an app goes live sitewide rather than discovering it in next quarter's numbers.
