Magento to Shopify migration
The most involved migration we run, and the complexity is rarely in the products. It is in the attribute mapping, the customer-group pricing and whatever the ERP handshake looks like.
Brands we build and scale
The redirect map is written before any data moves.
Every URL changes when you leave Magento. That is not a detail to handle at the end β it is the single thing that decides whether the organic traffic you have spent years earning arrives on the new store or disappears.
So the URL map comes first: every old path matched to its new equivalent, reviewed against Search Console and your top landing pages, and shipped as 301s with the launch rather than patched in afterwards. Titles and meta descriptions carry across, internal linking is rebuilt, and we watch Search Console closely for the weeks that follow.
Done that way, rankings dip briefly and recover. Done without a map, they do not come back on their own β and by the time it is obvious, the old store is gone and the evidence with it.
What sends brands off Magento
The total cost stopped making sense
Licence, hosting, and a development team on standby. For most mid-market D2C brands that is several times what Shopify costs for capability they never use.
Security patching is not optional
Unpatched Magento is a known target, and the patch cadence is relentless. On Shopify that entire class of work disappears.
Upgrades are projects
A major version upgrade is a quarter of engineering time that produces no new customer value.
The talent pool is shrinking
Magento developers are harder to hire and more expensive every year. Handover risk is real.
What actually breaks
Every migration page on the internet lists what moves across. These are the things that do not, and they are what decides whether the project goes well. We would rather you read them now than discover them at launch.
Custom attributes
Magento's EAV model has no direct Shopify equivalent. Attributes become metafields, and how they are grouped decides how easily you can merchandise afterwards. This is a design decision, not an export setting.
Extensions
Every Magento extension needs a Shopify equivalent or a rebuild. We inventory these during scoping and tell you which have no clean answer.
Complex B2B logic
Shopify Plus covers company accounts, multiple buyers, customer-specific catalogues and payment terms. If your logic goes beyond that, we would rather say so than migrate you into a corner.
ERP and PIM integration
Usually the longest single item. The connector has to be rebuilt against Shopify's API, and that work should be scoped separately rather than buried in the migration estimate.
How the migration runs
Scope and audit
We go through the Magento store properly β catalogue, customisation, integrations, and anything platform-specific that will need a Shopify equivalent. You get the list before you get a quote.
URL map and 301 plan
Written and reviewed before any data moves, against your actual traffic rather than a generic pattern.
Data migration
Products, variants, customers, orders and content, into a staging store you can check against the live one.
Build and rebuild
Theme, the Shopify equivalents of whatever the old platform did natively, and the integrations you actually use.
Launch
DNS, redirects live with it, and analytics and Search Console verified on the new property the same day.
Watch
Crawl and ranking monitoring for the weeks after, because that is when a missed redirect shows up and when it is still cheap to fix.
Questions we get every week
What does a Magento to Shopify migration actually involve?
Catalogue, customers and order history are the routine part. The four things that decide the timeline are custom attribute mapping, customer-group and tiered pricing, any ERP or PIM handshake, and the URL map. We scope all four explicitly before quoting. A straightforward catalogue runs two to three weeks; deep B2B logic runs longer.
Will we lose our B2B functionality?
It depends how custom it is, and we will be direct during scoping. Shopify Plus handles company accounts, multiple buyers per company, customer-specific catalogues and price lists, and payment terms β which covers most B2B requirements we see. Where it genuinely does not reach, we will tell you rather than migrating you into a corner.
We are still on Magento 1. What now?
You have an urgent problem rather than a strategic choice. Magento 1 reached end of life in 2020 and has had no official security support since, which makes an unpatched store a known target. The realistic options are Shopify or Magento 2, and for most mid-market brands the total cost comparison now favours Shopify by a wide margin.
Can you preserve our SEO?
Yes, with the same discipline as any migration: a complete URL map written before data moves, 301s for every product, category and CMS page, title tags and meta descriptions carried across, structured data rebuilt, and Search Console monitored closely afterwards. Magento sites often have deep category structures, so the map is larger than most β which is a reason to plan it, not to skip it.
Is Shopify actually powerful enough for us?
For most mid-market brands, comfortably. Where we would pause: very large attribute-driven catalogues, tight ERP coupling that would be expensive to rebuild, or regulatory requirements demanding control of hosting and data residency. If one of those describes you, staying on Magento may be right and we will say so.
