Shopify development cost in India — the real numbers
Most agency pricing pages say 'contact us for a quote'. This one does not. Below are the actual bands we and the wider Indian market quote in, what moves a project from one band to the next, and where the costs nobody mentions upfront tend to appear.
Why Shopify quotes vary by 10x for what sounds like the same store
Three things drive almost all of the variance: how much of the theme is custom versus configured, how many external systems the store has to talk to, and whether anyone is accountable for the store converting after launch. A ₹25,000 store and a ₹2,50,000 store can both be described as 'a Shopify store with 200 products'.
The second source of variance is what is excluded. Apps, the Shopify subscription itself, payment gateway fees, premium themes, stock photography, content writing and post-launch support are all frequently left out of the headline number and invoiced later.
We quote fixed-scope against a written deliverable. The bands below are what we actually charge, alongside the wider Indian market rates so you can sanity-check any quote you are holding — including ours.
What actually moves the price
If a quote is higher than you expected, it is almost always one of these six things.
Custom design vs theme
Configuring a premium theme is days of work. Designing and building a bespoke storefront from a brand system is weeks. This is the single biggest swing factor.
Catalogue size & complexity
200 simple products import cleanly. 5,000 SKUs with variant matrices, bundles, size charts and per-region pricing need data normalisation before anything can be built.
Integrations
Every external system — ERP, WMS, courier, accounting, CRM, subscription billing — adds build and testing time. Two integrations is routine; six is a different project.
Multi-currency & language
Selling into the Gulf, the US and the UK from one brand means Markets configuration, currency rounding rules, translated content and regional tax handling.
Migration scope
A migration costs more than a fresh build at the same design level, because the URL mapping, data reconciliation and redirect testing are real work that a new store does not need.
Post-launch accountability
A store that is handed over is cheaper than one where the agency stays accountable for conversion rate and revenue. Decide which you are buying before comparing quotes.
What a Shopify store costs to build
One-time development cost. Timelines assume brand assets and product data are ready at kickoff.
| Type of build | Cost (INR) | Cost (USD) | Timeline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic store setup | ₹25,000 – ₹60,000 | $300 – $700 | 1–2 weeks |
| Standard custom store | ₹75,000 – ₹1,50,000 | $900 – $1,800 | 2–4 weeks |
| Premium custom design | ₹1,50,000 – ₹2,50,000 | $1,800 – $3,000 | 4–8 weeks |
| Platform migration | ₹75,000 – ₹3,50,000 | $900 – $4,200 | 3–10 weeks |
| Shopify Plus build | ₹3,00,000 – ₹20,00,000+ | $3,600 – $24,000+ | 10–20 weeks |
| Headless (Hydrogen) | ₹8,00,000+ | $9,600+ | 16–28 weeks |
USD conversions at approximately ₹83 to the dollar. Indian agency rates run 40–60% below equivalent US and UK shops, which is the main reason international brands hire here.
What Shopify developers charge per hour
For reference when you are comparing a fixed-scope quote against hourly engagement. These are market rates, not only ours.
| Who you hire | Rate (INR/hr) | Rate (USD/hr) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freelancer (Upwork/Fiverr) | ₹500 – ₹1,500 | $10 – $25 | Small isolated tasks |
| Independent consultant | ₹1,000 – ₹3,000 | $15 – $40 | Specialist one-off work |
| Indian agency | ₹1,500 – ₹4,000 | $20 – $45 | Full builds with continuity |
| US agency | — | $75 – $150 | Local timezone requirement |
| UK agency | — | $60 – $130 | Local timezone requirement |
Hourly engagement transfers scope risk to you. For a defined build, a fixed-scope quote is almost always the cheaper structure.
What you pay every month after launch
The number most quotes leave out. Budget for this alongside the build cost, not after it.
| Line item | Monthly cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify Basic | ₹1,994 | Suits stores under roughly ₹20L annual revenue |
| Shopify Grow | ₹7,447 | Lower transaction fees, more staff accounts |
| Shopify Advanced | ₹30,164 | Advanced reporting, third-party calculated shipping |
| Shopify Plus | ~$2,000+ | Billed in USD, variable-rate above volume thresholds |
| Apps | ₹2,000 – ₹15,000 | Reviews, email, subscriptions, page builder |
| Payment gateway | 2% – 3% per order | Razorpay, Shopify Payments or PayU |
| Agency retainer | ₹10,000 – ₹1,50,000 | Optional — maintenance through full growth management |

Questions we get every week
How much does it cost to build a Shopify store in India?
A basic Shopify store setup costs ₹25,000 to ₹60,000. A standard custom store runs ₹75,000 to ₹1,50,000, and a premium custom design ₹1,50,000 to ₹2,50,000. Shopify Plus enterprise builds start at ₹3,00,000 and can exceed ₹20,00,000 for multi-store or headless architectures. These are one-time development costs, separate from your monthly Shopify subscription and app fees.
What is the cheapest way to get a Shopify store built?
Configuring a premium theme with your own content and product data is the cheapest route — ₹25,000 to ₹60,000 through an agency, or free if you do it yourself. The trade-off is that your store looks like every other store using that theme, and conversion optimisation is left to you. For a first store testing a product, that is often the correct decision.
Why do Shopify agencies quote such different prices?
Three reasons: how much of the theme is custom versus configured, how many external systems the store integrates with, and whether the agency remains accountable for the store's performance after launch. A fourth reason is exclusions — apps, subscriptions, gateway fees, content writing and support are frequently left out of headline quotes and billed later. Always compare written scopes, not headline numbers.
What does a Shopify developer charge per hour in India?
Freelancers charge ₹500 to ₹1,500 per hour and independent consultants ₹1,000 to ₹3,000. Indian agencies bill ₹1,500 to ₹4,000 per hour, against $75 to $150 in the US and $60 to $130 in the UK. For a defined build, fixed-scope pricing is usually cheaper than hourly because it transfers scope risk to the agency.
How much does Shopify itself cost per month in India?
Shopify Basic is around ₹1,994 per month, Grow around ₹7,447, and Advanced around ₹30,164. Shopify Plus starts at approximately USD 2,000 per month on a variable rate. On top of the plan, budget ₹2,000 to ₹15,000 monthly for apps and 2% to 3% per order in payment gateway fees. Shopify sets these prices and adjusts them, so confirm current rates directly.
Is it worth hiring an agency instead of a freelancer?
For a simple first store on a stock theme, a good freelancer is often the right call and clearly cheaper. An agency earns its premium on continuity, cover when one person is unavailable, and accountability across design, development and marketing together. If your store is your primary revenue channel, single-point-of-failure risk is usually the deciding factor rather than price.
