What Shopify Development Actually Costs in India — And Why Quotes Vary 10x

Real rupee ranges for Shopify builds, migrations and Plus in India — and the five scope variables that explain why one store quotes ₹35,000 and another ₹15 lakh.

What Shopify Development Actually Costs in India — And Why Quotes Vary 10x

A straight answer, because that is what you came for. In India, a competent Shopify store built on a premium theme with real design work runs ₹1.2 lakh to ₹4 lakh. A custom-designed build with non-trivial integrations — ERP, warehouse, subscription logic, multi-country — runs ₹5 lakh to ₹15 lakh. Shopify Plus implementations start around ₹8 lakh and go well past ₹25 lakh when B2B, wholesale channels or headless front-ends are involved. And yes, you can also get a store live for ₹35,000. Both quotes can be honest. They are describing different things.

The reason the Shopify development cost in India appears to swing 10x is that almost nobody quotes the same scope. One vendor is pricing four weeks of theme configuration. Another is pricing sixty days of design, front-end engineering, data migration, QA across four browsers, and a launch plan. The invoice is the only part that looks comparable.

What ₹35,000 buys, and what it does not

At the bottom of the market, you get a purchased theme (Shopify's premium themes cost $250–$450 one time), your logo dropped in, colours changed, five or six products loaded, and a Razorpay account connected. Two weeks, maybe three. For a founder testing a single product with 20 SKUs and no legacy data, this is often the correct spend. We have told people to do exactly this and come back in six months.

What it does not buy: a collection page that filters properly at 400 SKUs, a PDP that loads in under two seconds on a 4G phone in Nagpur, COD abuse controls, GST-compliant invoicing, or anyone to answer the phone when checkout breaks during a Diwali sale. Those are engineering problems, and engineering time is the thing you are actually buying at higher price points.

The ₹2.5 lakh build, line by line

This is where most serious D2C brands land for their first real store. A rough split of where the money goes on a project of that size:

  • Design (₹50,000–₹90,000): Figma for homepage, collection, PDP, cart, plus two or three content templates. Not 30 screens. Mobile first, because 75–85% of your traffic will be mobile.
  • Front-end build (₹80,000–₹1.2 lakh): Custom sections in a base theme, so your marketing team can rearrange the homepage without raising a ticket. This is the line item cheap quotes skip, and it is the one that decides whether you need a developer every fortnight for the next two years.
  • Catalogue and data (₹20,000–₹60,000): Variants, metafields, size charts, image optimisation. At 500 SKUs with three variants each, this is genuinely days of work. Data entry at ₹40–₹120 per SKU adds up faster than founders expect.
  • Apps, payments, shipping (₹25,000–₹40,000): Razorpay or Cashfree, Shiprocket or Delhivery, a COD verification flow, reviews, GST invoicing, WhatsApp notifications. Configuration and testing, not just installation.
  • QA and launch (₹25,000–₹40,000): Real device testing, 301 redirect map if you are replatforming, analytics and server-side events, a soft launch window.

Add 18% GST on top. A surprising number of quotes we get shown by prospects are exclusive of GST and do not say so.

Where the 10x gap actually comes from

Five variables explain nearly all of the spread in Shopify development cost across Indian agencies.

Number of unique templates. A store with 6 templates and a store with 22 templates are not the same build. Ask any vendor to list the templates in scope. If they cannot, the number is invented.

Integrations. Connecting Unicommerce, Increff, Zoho Books or Tally to Shopify is where budgets double. A middleware sync for inventory and orders is 40–120 hours of work depending on how tolerant the other system's API is. Tally, in particular, is a tax on everyone's sanity. Custom app work of this kind starts around ₹1.5 lakh and we have seen it justify ₹6 lakh when there is a WMS and a returns flow involved. If you need that, read what goes into Shopify app development before you sign anything.

Performance in or out of scope. Most quotes silently exclude it. Getting a page from a 3.4s LCP to under 1.8s on mobile means auditing every app script, deferring what can be deferred, and sometimes removing a slider your designer loves. Budget 20–40 hours. It is the highest-return line item in the whole document and the easiest to cut when someone wants to look cheap.

Seniority. An Indian Shopify agency billing ₹1,800–₹2,500 per hour is staffing mid-level Liquid developers. At ₹3,500–₹5,000 per hour you are getting people who have shipped Plus stores and will tell you when your idea is expensive for no reason. Freelancers at ₹500–₹1,200 per hour can be excellent. They also disappear, and one person cannot cover design, front-end, integrations and QA.

Change requests. The oldest move in the business: quote 40% below market, define scope loosely, then price every addition at a premium. If the proposal has no change-request rate stated, ask for one. A vendor confident in their estimate has no problem writing it down.

The running bill nobody puts in the quote

Development is a one-time cost. The platform is not. Monthly, in rupees, for a mid-size Indian D2C brand:

  • Shopify plan: roughly ₹2,000 for Basic, ₹7,500 for Grow, ₹30,000 for Advanced when billed annually in INR. Advanced becomes worth it mostly for lower transaction rates and better reporting, not features you will notice daily.
  • Apps: ₹8,000–₹35,000. Reviews, loyalty, upsells, subscriptions, filters, a page builder. Every app is a small monthly rent and a small performance cost. Audit them quarterly. We routinely delete four or five apps in the first month of a retainer.
  • Payments: Razorpay and Cashfree sit around 2% plus GST on domestic cards and UPI. COD adds a per-order remittance fee, typically ₹20–₹40 or a percentage. If COD is 60% of your orders, that fee line matters more than your Shopify plan.
  • Retainer: ₹40,000–₹1.5 lakh a month for ongoing development, CRO and fixes. Below ₹30,000 you are buying ticket-taking, not a plan.

Also: Shopify bills in USD unless you have INR billing enabled, and your card issuer will add a forex markup of around 3%. Small, but it surprises people at the end of year one.

Migrations are priced on a different basis

Moving from WooCommerce, Magento, or a custom PHP build is not a discount on a new store. It is a new store plus a data problem. The variables that set the price: number of SKUs and variants, order and customer history, whether you have blog and CMS content with earned rankings, and how many URLs need redirecting.

A clean WooCommerce migration with 300 SKUs and no order history: ₹1.2–₹2.5 lakh. A Magento 1 store with 4,000 SKUs, six years of orders, custom attributes and a live SEO footprint: ₹4–₹9 lakh, and the redirect map alone is a week of work. Skip the redirects and you will watch organic traffic drop 30–50% within a fortnight. We have been called in to clean up that exact mess more than once. Our approach is laid out under Shopify migration, including what we insist on testing before DNS changes.

When Shopify Plus is not yet worth it

Plus runs roughly ₹1.9–₹2.2 lakh per month at the entry commitment. For most Indian brands doing under ₹5 crore a year, that is a bad trade. The things founders think they need Plus for — more staff accounts, better speed, a nicer checkout — are largely available on Advanced now that Checkout Extensibility has replaced checkout.liquid for everyone.

Plus earns its money in three situations: you need Shopify Functions for genuinely complex discount or shipping logic; you are running multiple storefronts across India, the UAE and the US with separate catalogues and payment stacks; or you are doing B2B wholesale alongside D2C and want it native. Also flash sales — Launchpad and the higher checkout throughput are real. If two of those apply, the maths works. If none do, spend the ₹24 lakh a year on performance marketing and a better retention programme. We say this to people who arrive asking us to sell them Plus, and we have written more about the threshold as a Shopify Plus agency in India.

How to read a Shopify quote without getting burned

Four things to demand before you sign, regardless of budget:

  1. A template list. Named pages, with a note on which ones get custom sections. This kills 80% of scope disputes.
  2. Hours, or at least a phase-wise split with dates. A single lump sum with a 60-day timeline tells you nothing about who is working when.
  3. What happens after launch. How many days of free bug-fixing? What counts as a bug versus a change? Get it in writing. Thirty days is standard; two weeks is thin.
  4. Code ownership and handover. The theme code, the Git repo if there is one, admin access at owner level. Some vendors keep stores hostage through access. It happens more than the industry admits.

One more: ask who is actually writing the Liquid. If the answer is vague, the person you liked in the sales call is not on the project. Hiring rules of thumb for both models are in our notes on how to hire a Shopify developer in India.

If your budget is ₹1 lakh, here is what to cut

Not the build quality. Cut the scope. Launch with four templates: home, collection, PDP, and one content page. Use a premium theme and its native sections rather than paying for custom ones. Put every rupee you saved into product photography, because on a Shopify store the images are the design. Skip the loyalty app, the quiz, the bundle builder. Add them at ₹50 lakh monthly revenue when you can measure whether they pay for themselves.

What not to cut at any budget: mobile page speed, a COD verification step, and correct GST invoicing. The first costs you revenue every day. The second costs you 8–15% of COD orders in RTO. The third costs you an accountant's weekend every month.

If you have a quote in hand and want a second read on it, send us the store URL and the proposal. Our free audit covers speed, structure and the app stack, and we will tell you plainly which line items are padded and which are the ones you should not touch. If you would rather see the range broken down further first, we keep a working breakdown of Shopify development cost in India by project type.
