A working Shopify store for a Kerala D2C brand lands somewhere between ₹45,000 and ₹6,00,000, and that range is useless to you unless someone breaks it apart. So here it is in line items. A single-product ayurveda brand on a free theme with Razorpay and Delhivery can be live for well under a lakh. A 300-SKU spice exporter selling into the Gulf with COD, multi-currency display and an Ayush-compliant label workflow will not be. The gap is not agency greed. It is about eleven separate decisions, each with its own price tag, and most founders only discover items seven through eleven after the invoice.
What the Shopify website cost in Kochi actually covers
Split the number into three buckets before you talk to anyone: one-time build, recurring platform, and recurring people. Quotes get compared badly because a ₹80,000 quote and a ₹2,40,000 quote are usually describing different buckets, not different quality.
- One-time build: theme licence, design, front-end development, data migration, payment and shipping configuration, testing.
- Recurring platform: Shopify plan, apps, domain, email tool, transaction fees.
- Recurring people: maintenance, content updates, campaign landing pages, the person who fixes the checkout at 11pm on the first day of Onam sales.
Most quotes you receive in Kochi price only the first bucket. The second bucket is the one that surprises people in month four.
Theme and design: ₹0 to ₹1,50,000
Dawn is free and genuinely good. If your catalogue is under 40 SKUs and your brand story is carried by photography rather than layout, a lightly customised free theme is the correct commercial decision and any agency that tells you otherwise is padding.
Paid themes from the Shopify Theme Store run roughly $180 to $400, so ₹16,000 to ₹35,000 as a one-time buy. You pay for pre-built sections you would otherwise commission: mega menus, size guides, bundle blocks, sticky add-to-cart.
Custom design is the item with the widest spread. Wireframes plus a designed homepage, collection page, product page, cart and two content pages sits around ₹40,000 to ₹1,20,000 in this market. Full brand-led design with custom illustration, Malayalam and English type pairing, and a festive theme variant for Onam goes past that. A kasavu or handloom brand where the product photography is the product usually needs less design and more photo budget. Reallocate accordingly.
Development: ₹50,000 to ₹2,50,000
This is theme customisation, section building, metafield setup, third-party integrations and QA. Rate cards in Kerala and Bengaluru for a competent Shopify developer sit roughly between ₹900 and ₹2,200 an hour depending on whether you are buying a freelancer's time or a team with QA and a project manager behind it. A reasonably ambitious 180-SKU store takes 80 to 140 developer hours.
Things that quietly add hours: variant-heavy catalogues, subscription logic for ayurveda refills, a size or dosage guide that needs per-product data, and anything involving a live external price feed. If you sell gold jewellery, the rate logic alone is a project. Making, wastage, metal weight and GST all have to recalculate when the spot rate moves, and doing it by hand every morning is how stores end up selling at yesterday's price. That specific problem is why we built Gold & Silver Live Rate rather than rebuilding the same custom script for every jeweller.
Apps: the recurring number nobody budgets
A lean Indian D2C stack runs $60 to $150 a month once you count reviews, shipping, WhatsApp, email and a filter or search app. That is ₹5,000 to ₹13,000 a month, ₹60,000 to ₹1,56,000 a year, and it is charged in dollars so it moves with the rupee. Budget it as a line, not as an afterthought.
Where we cut: page builders you stop using after launch, three separate analytics apps, anything that duplicates what Shopify Flow or native discounts already do. Each app also injects scripts. Five apps on a product page is often the difference between a 1.6s and a 3.4s LCP, which then costs you a speed cleanup later. Pay once or pay twice.
Payments, COD and what the gateway really costs you
Shopify Payments is not available to Indian merchants, so you will be on Razorpay, Cashfree, PayU or similar. Integration itself is not a big build item, ₹8,000 to ₹15,000 including test transactions across UPI, cards, netbanking and wallets. The real cost is MDR: roughly 2% plus GST on domestic cards and netbanking, effectively nil on UPI, and 3% and upwards on international cards. On ₹40 lakh of annual revenue at a 2% blended rate that is ₹80,000 a year, more than your whole app stack.
COD is its own build. You need a COD fee or a prepaid discount, order-value caps, pincode-level availability, and OTP or WhatsApp confirmation for high-value carts. Expect ₹10,000 to ₹25,000 to configure properly. Kerala carts skew prepaid more than the national pattern in our experience, largely because UPI adoption is deep here, but COD still shows up on first orders from new customers and on anything above ₹2,000. Test your own split after 200 orders and set the COD fee from that, not from a blog post.
One detail that catches exporters: if you want to accept international card payments for Gulf orders, that is an export transaction with its own onboarding, documentation and settlement timeline. Start the gateway approval before you start the build, because it is the item most likely to hold up launch.
Shipping zones: Kerala, rest of India, and the Gulf
Domestic setup is cheap. Shiprocket, Delhivery or a direct carrier account, weight-based rates, a free-shipping threshold, and a Kerala-only same-state rate if you are doing a lot of local delivery around Ernakulam and Thrissur. Half a day of work.
Gulf shipping is where the budget moves. You need per-country zones for the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain, weight bands that reflect what Aramex or DHL actually charge you, HS codes on every product, and a commercial invoice that customs will accept. Add an IEC code and, if you are zero-rating exports, an LUT with your GST registration. For food and ayurveda the destination country has its own import registration and label rules, so check before you promise two-day delivery to Sharjah. Realistic build cost for a properly configured cross-border setup: ₹20,000 to ₹45,000.
Multi-currency is the honest disappointment here. Without Shopify Payments, true multi-currency checkout is restricted for Indian merchants. Most Kerala brands selling to NRI buyers end up displaying approximate AED or USD prices and charging in INR, which works, or they register an entity abroad, which is a tax decision and not a web decision.
Content migration: price it per SKU
Moving from WooCommerce, Wix, an Instagram-only setup or an old custom build costs roughly ₹150 to ₹400 per SKU including images, variants, descriptions, SEO fields and URL redirects. Bulk CSV import covers the mechanical part. The money goes into cleaning inconsistent data, resizing images, writing missing descriptions and mapping old URLs so you do not lose rankings. If you have 400 legacy URLs and skip redirects, you will feel it in organic traffic within three weeks. We cover the process in more detail on our Shopify migration page.
Malayalam content is an add-on. Shopify's native translation tooling handles two additional languages on most plans, so the cost is the translation itself, typically ₹2 to ₹5 per word from a human translator. For 40 pages and 180 product descriptions that is a real number. Machine translation into Malayalam reads badly enough that customers notice, so either budget for a human or stay English-only.
A worked budget: 180-SKU ayurveda brand, Kochi, shipping to Kerala and the GCC
- Premium theme licence: ₹25,000 one-time
- Design and development: ₹1,40,000
- Migration of 180 SKUs at ₹200 each: ₹36,000
- Payment gateway and COD logic: ₹15,000
- Shipping zones including six GCC countries: ₹20,000
- Agency subtotal: ₹2,11,000, plus 18% GST = ₹2,48,980
- Apps, year one: ₹48,000
- Shopify plan, year one on annual billing: ₹24,000
- Domain and transactional email: ₹3,000
Year-one total: ₹3,48,980. If you are GST-registered you claim input credit on the ₹37,980, bringing the real outlay closer to ₹3,11,000. Year two drops to roughly ₹75,000 of platform and app cost plus whatever you spend on maintenance.
Change two assumptions and the number moves hard. Drop the Gulf zones and the custom design, use Dawn, and the same catalogue launches for about ₹1,10,000. Add subscriptions, a loyalty programme and a B2B wholesale channel for distributors and you are past ₹5,00,000. Our broader Shopify development cost breakdown for India has the ranges by scope.
What the cheapest Shopify website in Kochi actually gets you
The ₹15,000 store exists. Someone installs a free theme, imports your products, connects Razorpay and hands over the login. For a pre-revenue brand with 15 SKUs testing whether anyone wants the product, that is the right call. Spend the saved money on photography and ₹20,000 of Meta ads instead. We have told founders exactly this and lost the project.
What you do not get at that price: proper COD rules, a tested checkout across UPI apps, redirects, structured data, speed work, or anyone to call when the store breaks during Onam. You also usually get a theme stuffed with apps to compensate for missing development, which makes the page slow. Fine for a test. Not fine once you are doing ₹5 lakh a month.
Maintenance after launch: ₹8,000 to ₹60,000 a month
Three tiers in practice. A light plan around ₹8,000 to ₹15,000 covers theme and app updates, minor content edits, uptime checks and a few hours of fixes. A growth retainer at ₹25,000 to ₹60,000 adds landing pages for campaigns, CRO changes, speed monitoring and merchandising work before Onam and Vishu. Above that you are buying a part-time team, at which point compare it honestly against hiring in-house near Infopark, because one salaried developer plus overhead costs more per month than most retainers and gives you one skill set instead of four.
Non-negotiable regardless of tier: someone checks the store the week before Onam and the week before Vishu, with a deploy freeze during the peak. The most expensive maintenance we have ever seen bought was the emergency kind, on a Thursday, in August.
Questions we get asked in slightly different words
Is the price different in Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Thrissur or Thiruvananthapuram? No. Shopify design and build work is remote by nature and the rate card does not change by district. What changes the number is scope: SKU count, integrations, whether you export, whether you need Malayalam. A brand in Kollam and a brand in Kochi with identical requirements pay the same. If a quote is higher because the agency is in a metro, that is positioning, not cost.
How much to build a Shopify store if I am a small business? Plan ₹60,000 to ₹1,20,000 for the build plus ₹6,000 to ₹9,000 a month running cost. Use a free or cheap theme, keep the app stack to four, skip multi-currency until Gulf orders are actually arriving, and put the difference into product photos. Upgrade the design after the store has revenue to justify it.
What does a non-Shopify eCommerce website cost? WooCommerce looks cheaper on day one, roughly ₹40,000 to ₹90,000 to build, then ₹2,000 to ₹8,000 a month for decent hosting. The costs that appear later are security patching, plugin conflicts after updates, and needing a developer for things Shopify merchants do themselves. A fully custom build starts around ₹6,00,000 and only makes sense if you have logic Shopify genuinely cannot express. For 95% of Kerala D2C brands it does not.
Does the Shopify plan itself matter much to the total? Less than people think. Basic on annual billing is roughly ₹2,000 a month, the mid tier around ₹7,000. Plus is a different conversation entirely and is rarely worth it below ₹8 to ₹10 crore of annual revenue or serious B2B needs.
If you want a number for your own catalogue rather than a range, send us your SKU count, your current platform, whether you ship to the Gulf, and your Onam target. We will send back an itemised estimate you can argue with line by line. A free store audit is the faster starting point if you already have a store and want to know what it would cost to fix rather than rebuild, and our Kochi page has how we work locally.
