Cost to Hire a Shopify Developer in Bangalore, Rate by Rate

Freelance hourly, dedicated monthly, agency retainer or in-house salary: the four ways Bangalore Shopify talent is bought, with the loaded per-hour maths on each.

Cost to Hire a Shopify Developer in Bangalore, Rate by Rate

A competent Shopify developer in Bangalore bills between ₹600 and ₹1,200 an hour as a freelancer, ₹80,000 to ₹1,80,000 a month on a dedicated full-time arrangement, and costs roughly ₹9,00,000 to ₹14,00,000 a year in CTC if you hire them onto your payroll. Agency retainers start around ₹60,000 a month for a small block of hours and climb past ₹2,50,000 for a team that owns your storefront. Those four numbers look very different because they are measuring different things, and the cost to hire a Shopify developer in Bangalore only becomes comparable once you convert all of them to a loaded rate per productive hour. We do that below with actual arithmetic.

The four ways you can actually buy the work

Freelance hourly. Dedicated monthly (a developer allocated to you full time through an agency or a staffing outfit). Agency retainer or fixed-scope project. In-house salary. Almost every founder we talk to is comparing two of these and quietly assuming the other two are irrelevant. Usually one of the ignored ones is the right answer.

The deciding variable is not price. It's how many hours of real Shopify work you have per month, and whether that volume is steady. Fifteen hours a month of theme tweaks is a freelancer. A hundred and sixty hours a month, every month, for a year, is either a dedicated developer or a hire. Between those, it's a retainer.

Shopify developer hourly rate in Bangalore: what each band buys

Rates cluster into three bands, and the gap between them is mostly about what the person can do unsupervised.

  • ₹400 to ₹600 an hour. Someone under two years in, comfortable editing an existing Dawn-based theme, installing apps, fixing a broken collection layout. They will not architect anything. At this rate you are also, quite often, buying a reseller who has subcontracted the work, which is fine until something breaks at 11pm before a sale.
  • ₹700 to ₹1,200 an hour. The working middle of the Bangalore market. Writes Liquid properly, handles metafields and metaobjects, integrates Razorpay or Cashfree without breaking the thank-you page, wires up Shiprocket or Delhivery, knows why your COD orders need an OTP gate and can build it.
  • ₹1,500 to ₹2,500 an hour. Checkout extensibility, Shopify Functions, Hydrogen, custom apps, multi-store setups, migrations off Magento or WooCommerce with URL maps that don't torch your organic traffic. There aren't many of these people in the city and they are mostly employed.

Freelance charges in Bangalore run a little higher than the rest of India for the same skill, for a boring reason: product companies and SaaS employers set the salary floor here, so anyone good has an outside option. Expect a premium of about 10 to 20 percent over Coimbatore, Kochi or Ahmedabad for equivalent work.

Two tax details that change the real number. If the freelancer's turnover is under the threshold and they don't charge GST, you save nothing: as a GST-registered merchant you would have claimed that 18 percent back as input credit anyway. And on professional fees you're expected to deduct TDS under 194J, typically 10 percent, which a lot of small freelancers will argue about the first time. Settle it in writing before work starts.

Dedicated Shopify developer monthly cost in Bengaluru

A dedicated developer is one person allocated to you full time, billed monthly, working your backlog and only your backlog. In Bengaluru that runs ₹80,000 to ₹1,10,000 a month for a mid-level developer and ₹1,40,000 to ₹1,80,000 for a senior who can also make architecture calls.

At ₹1,10,000 a month against roughly 160 billable hours, you're paying about ₹690 an hour. That's below the freelance mid-band, which is the whole argument for this model. You're trading flexibility for rate: you commit to the month whether or not you have a month's worth of work.

The failure mode is real and we see it often. A brand takes a dedicated developer, feeds them twelve hours of work in week one, then goes quiet for three weeks because the founder is busy with a shipment. You paid ₹1,10,000 for forty hours. If your backlog isn't written down and prioritised before the month starts, don't buy this. Buy hours.

Shopify development agency pricing in Bangalore

Agencies sell two shapes. Retainers, where you buy a block of hours a month with a named team and a response SLA, and fixed-scope projects.

Retainers here start around ₹60,000 a month for roughly 40 to 50 hours and go to ₹2,50,000 and up for a pod of developer, designer and a project manager. Fixed-scope pricing is easier to picture: a clean theme build on Dawn with custom sections, ₹1,50,000 to ₹4,00,000. A migration from WooCommerce or Magento with catalogue cleanup, redirects and a re-theme, ₹4,00,000 to ₹12,00,000 depending on how bad the data is. A Shopify Plus build with checkout extensions and B2B, ₹10,00,000 upward. We've written the detailed breakdown of what Shopify development costs in India if you want line items rather than bands.

What the retainer premium actually buys: someone else holds the context. When your developer is on leave during the Diwali week and a Razorpay webhook starts failing, there's a second person who knows your store. If you're a single-store D2C brand doing ₹40 lakh a month, that redundancy is worth more than the 15 percent rate difference. If you're doing ₹4 lakh a month, it isn't, and any agency that tells you otherwise is selling.

Shopify developer salary in Bengaluru, and the cost nobody budgets

Payroll ranges in the city, for people who genuinely know Shopify rather than PHP developers who have seen a Liquid file once:

  • 1 to 2 years: ₹4,00,000 to ₹6,50,000 CTC
  • 3 to 5 years: ₹8,00,000 to ₹14,00,000
  • Senior, Plus and custom app experience: ₹16,00,000 to ₹24,00,000, and you'll be bidding against SaaS companies for them

Now the part that gets left out of the spreadsheet. Take a ₹9,00,000 CTC hire. Add a recruiter fee at 8.33 percent, ₹75,000, amortised over the two years you realistically keep them: ₹37,500 a year. Laptop at ₹90,000 over three years: ₹30,000. Desk, power and internet at ₹6,000 a month: ₹72,000. Dev tooling, theme licences, staging apps, a Shopify partner sandbox and the odd paid app: call it ₹36,000. Loaded annual cost, ₹10,75,500.

Productive hours: 260 working days, minus 18 days leave, minus 12 public holidays, leaves 230. Knock off about 15 percent for standups, hiring loops, internal meetings and the general friction of being employed, and you're at roughly 195 effective days. At 7 focused hours each, 1,365 hours a year.

₹10,75,500 divided by 1,365 is about ₹790 an hour.

So the in-house developer you hired to save money costs roughly what a good freelancer charges, and slightly more than a dedicated developer through an agency. In-house wins on three things instead: institutional memory, availability at 9pm during a festive sale, and the fact that nobody else has a claim on their calendar. It loses badly on skill breadth. One person cannot be strong at Liquid, Core Web Vitals, Meta pixel plumbing and custom app work. When that developer resigns in month fourteen, your store knowledge leaves with them, which is the risk nobody prices.

Part-time and how to buy ten hours a week

Part-time Shopify developers in Bangalore, meaning a fixed 15 to 20 hours a week at an agreed slot, typically quote ₹35,000 to ₹60,000 a month. It's the cheapest honest way to have a named person on your store without committing to a full seat.

It works when the work is predictable: weekly landing pages for campaigns, collection merchandising before an end-of-season sale, small CRO tests. It fails when the work is reactive, because a part-timer is full-time somewhere else and your emergency is their evening. If checkout goes down on a Saturday, a part-time arrangement will not save you.

What actually moves the invoice

Rate matters less than scope, and Indian storefronts carry scope that a US-focused brief doesn't. Rough hour counts from work we do regularly:

  • COD order verification with an OTP step, plus rules that block COD above a cart value or for pin codes with bad delivery history: 15 to 25 hours. Worth every hour if your RTO rate is in double digits.
  • Razorpay or Cashfree configured properly with UPI as the default on mobile, upsell offers surviving the redirect, and refunds flowing back cleanly: 8 to 15 hours.
  • GST-compliant invoicing with HSN codes and a place-of-supply split, wired to your accounting: 10 to 20 hours, more if you sell across states with mixed tax slabs.
  • Festive readiness: theme freeze, script audit, pre-rendering key templates, load testing the cart. 20 to 40 hours, and it has to happen in September, not the week before Diwali.
  • Speed work on a bloated theme, getting LCP from 3.5s to under 2s on a mid-range Android on 4G: 25 to 50 hours, and that's where most of your Meta spend is leaking. Our notes on Shopify speed optimisation cover what's fixable and what isn't.

A ₹600-an-hour developer who takes 40 hours to do a 15-hour job is more expensive than a ₹1,200 one. Ask for the hour estimate in writing, broken by task, before you compare rates at all.

Shopify developer rates: Bangalore vs Mumbai vs the rest

Mumbai freelance rates land close to Bangalore's, sometimes marginally higher at the senior end because the agency client mix there skews to larger retail and fashion brands with bigger budgets. Delhi NCR sits in the same band. Pune and Hyderabad run roughly 10 percent under Bangalore. Ahmedabad, Coimbatore, Kochi and Indore are meaningfully cheaper, often 25 to 35 percent below, and the quality spread is wider: there are excellent teams and there are body shops, and the rate card won't tell you which is which.

Since nearly all of this work is remote anyway, paying a Bangalore premium only makes sense for the things location still buys you: people who have shipped at scale, and a shorter path to someone who has already solved your exact problem. If you're hiring purely on price, hire outside the metros. If you want someone who has debugged a Shiprocket webhook at 2am during a festive sale, you're buying experience, and experience is priced by the market, not by the pin code. We've set out how we work with brands here on our Bangalore page, and the broader comparison of engagement models sits under hiring a Shopify developer in India.

Short answers to the questions people actually type

What does it cost to hire a Shopify expert in Bangalore for a one-off fix? Most experienced developers have a minimum engagement of 4 to 8 hours, so a genuine 30-minute fix still costs ₹3,000 to ₹8,000. Batch your small jobs into one ticket.

Is a dedicated developer cheaper than a full-time hire? Per hour, marginally. The bigger saving is that there's no recruitment cycle, no notice period and no laptop. You can stop in 30 days.

What should a first project cost? If your store is live and doing revenue, start with a paid audit in the ₹15,000 to ₹40,000 range rather than a build. It converts a vague worry into a priced list of tasks, and you can hand that list to anyone.

Will a freelancer stay? Sometimes for years. But the single most common problem we're called in to clean up is a store where the original freelancer disappeared and left no documentation, no repo and a theme with 40 unused app scripts. Ask for code in a Git repo you own, from day one, at any rate.

If you're still deciding between these four, the cheapest useful next step is to get your current store looked at by someone who isn't selling you a rebuild. Our free store audit comes back with a prioritised list and an hour estimate against each item, which is exactly the document you need to compare a ₹700 rate against a ₹1,200 one honestly.
