A store you can actually sell from costs between ₹45,000 and ₹1.6 lakh to build in Pune, plus roughly ₹2,000 a month to Shopify and ₹1,500 to ₹3,000 a month in apps. The spread isn't about the city. It's about how much of the work you hand over: a solo freelancer doing a theme install and 25 products sits at the bottom, a studio doing custom sections, a GST-compliant invoice flow, COD controls and a proper Razorpay setup sits at the top. Anything quoted under ₹20,000 is either a template dump with your logo on it, or someone who will vanish the week after launch.
That's the honest answer to the Shopify store setup cost in Pune question. The rest of this is what the money buys, and which of the cheap decisions we end up rebuilding six months later at full price.
The three price bands, and what breaks in each
₹15,000 to ₹40,000 (freelancer). Free theme, your product data entered manually, Razorpay connected, Shiprocket linked. It works. What you don't get: variant logic that survives a size chart change, collection structure that scales past 60 SKUs, or anyone to call at 11pm on the second day of a Diwali sale. Fine for testing whether people want the product at all.
₹60,000 to ₹1.2 lakh (small studio or two-person team). Paid theme or a well-customised free one, custom sections for the homepage and PDP, proper metafield structure, COD verification, GST-compliant invoicing, abandoned cart on WhatsApp and email, speed pass before launch. This is the band where most Pune D2C brands should start. It's also where the build stops being disposable.
₹2 lakh and up (agency build). Custom design from scratch, bespoke app or API work, ERP or Unicommerce sync, multi-location inventory, subscription logic. If you're doing under ₹15 lakh a month in revenue, you probably don't need this yet. We say that to people who arrive asking for it.
The minimum viable launch stack
Here's the list we'd hand a founder in Kothrud or Baner who wants to launch in three weeks without buying anything they'll throw away.
- Shopify Basic. Around ₹2,000 a month on monthly billing in India, less on annual. Check the current India pricing page before you budget, Shopify moves it.
- Domain. ₹900 to ₹1,400 a year for a .in or .com. Buy it in your own name, not your developer's account. We've had to chase transfers for weeks because someone skipped this.
- Theme. Dawn is free and genuinely good. A paid theme runs roughly ₹17,000 to ₹35,000 one time. Buy one only if it saves you 20-plus hours of custom section work, which for a large catalogue it often does.
- Razorpay or Cashfree. No setup fee. Cards and netbanking land around 2% plus GST; UPI is effectively free for most domestic merchants right now. Keep UPI as the default option on mobile, it clears fastest.
- COD with a verification step. Non-negotiable in India. ₹500 to ₹900 a month for an OTP or WhatsApp confirmation app.
- Shiprocket or Delhivery. Pay-as-you-go. Surface rates start around ₹30 per 500g slab depending on zone and plan.
- GST invoicing. Shopify's native invoice won't satisfy your CA. Budget ₹400 to ₹800 a month for an app that puts HSN, GSTIN and place of supply on the invoice correctly.
- Reviews and email. Free tiers work at launch. Omnisend or Klaviyo start costing once your list crosses a few thousand contacts, which is a good problem.
Total apps: ₹1,500 to ₹2,500 a month at launch. If your app bill crosses ₹6,000 before your first ₹5 lakh month, something is wrong.
First-year cash, with the arithmetic shown
A 30-SKU apparel brand, studio build, launching before the festive season:
- Shopify Basic, annual billing: ₹18,000
- Domain: ₹1,000
- Paid theme: ₹28,000
- Build and setup: ₹75,000
- Apps at ₹1,500/month: ₹18,000
- Product photography, 30 SKUs: ₹15,000
₹1,55,000 for year one, before inventory and before a single rupee of Meta spend. Year two drops to about ₹37,000 because the build and the theme don't repeat. That's the real shape of the cost: heavy once, light after.
Why the COD verification app pays for itself in week two
Run the numbers on your own return-to-origin rate instead of taking anyone's word for it. Say you do 500 orders a month, 300 of them COD, and 20% of those COD orders come back undelivered or refused. That's 60 RTOs. Each one costs you forward shipping plus return shipping, call it ₹120 all in, so ₹7,200 a month burnt on parcels that went nowhere. Packaging and the hours your ops person spends on re-inventory are on top.
An OTP confirmation step that kills even a third of those before dispatch saves ₹2,400 a month against an app that costs ₹700. That is the single highest-return ₹700 in Indian eCommerce, and it's the line item founders cut first when a quote looks high.
The cheap choices that always get redone
We rebuild the same five things over and over. None of them are exotic.
Page builder apps used for the entire site. They make the first homepage fast to ship and every change after that slow. The DOM balloons, mobile LCP crawls past three seconds on a 4G connection in a Pune suburb, and when you eventually want a new theme you rebuild every page by hand. Use native theme sections. If you need something the theme doesn't have, have a developer write the section.
Fourteen apps doing what three should. Every app injects script. A store we look at with a 2.6s LCP is usually carrying four apps the founder forgot they installed during a free trial. Audit the list quarterly and actually uninstall, not just disable. If you'd rather watch the score than remember to check, SwiftStore is our own app for scanning and monitoring PageSpeed over time, and we also do deeper Shopify speed work when the problem is in the theme rather than the apps.
Product data typed in by hand with no structure. No metafields, no consistent option naming, size written as "M" on one product and "Medium" on the next. Filters break. Feed exports to Meta and Google get rejected. Redoing 400 SKUs later costs more than doing 40 properly now.
Checkout customisation on a non-Plus plan. People still try. Shopify closed off checkout.liquid, and whatever hack a cheap developer sells you will break. If your checkout genuinely needs custom logic, that's a conversation about Shopify Plus, not about a workaround.
Unofficial WhatsApp integrations. Cheap per message, and the number gets banned. Use an official Business API provider from the start. Budget for it.
Shopify developer cost in Pune
Freelancers in the city quote roughly ₹500 to ₹1,200 an hour. Studio and agency rates run ₹1,200 to ₹2,500. A retained developer on part-time engagement lands somewhere between ₹35,000 and ₹80,000 a month depending on how much Liquid and JavaScript is involved versus content updates.
The rate matters less than the scope. Paying ₹600 an hour for someone who takes nine hours to build a section a ₹1,800 developer does in two is not a saving. Ask for a fixed price on a defined list of pages and features, with a named revision count. If a quote has no scope document attached, it is not a quote. Our notes on what Shopify development actually costs in India break the line items down further, and if you're deciding between a retainer and a project fee, hiring a developer directly is sometimes the cheaper call.
Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and why the address barely changes the price
Setup charges in Pimpri-Chinchwad, Hinjewadi, Wakad or Camp are the same as anywhere in the metro. The work is remote regardless. What does change is whether you're paying a premium for someone to physically turn up. We rarely do, and clients rarely want it once they realise a shared Slack channel and a weekly call is faster than a meeting in Pune traffic.
The local factor that does matter: your fulfilment. If you're shipping from a warehouse in Chakan or Bhosari, pick your courier on pickup reliability in that pincode, not on the headline rate. A ₹28 slab that misses pickup twice a week during the festive rush costs more than a ₹34 slab that doesn't. We work with brands across the city from our Pune engagements and this is the thing people underestimate every October.
Questions we get asked with the same money behind them
How much to start a Shopify store in India, total? Cheapest honest launch: about ₹30,000 including three months of platform fees, a free theme, a freelancer doing setup, and no photography because you shot it yourself. Realistic launch that survives a year: ₹1 lakh to ₹1.6 lakh. Add inventory and ad budget separately, and don't let the build eat the ad budget. A beautiful store with ₹10,000 of Meta spend behind it sells nothing.
What should a small business in Pune budget? ₹60,000 to ₹80,000 for the build, ₹5,000 a month for platform and apps, and at least ₹40,000 a month for ads in the first quarter. If the ₹40,000 isn't there, spend ₹30,000 on the build and put the difference into traffic. A cheaper store with customers beats a better one without them.
Why do company quotes vary so much for the same brief? Because the briefs aren't the same. "Shopify store setup" from one firm means theme install and 20 products. From another it means design, custom sections, data migration, payment and shipping configuration, GST invoicing, analytics, consent banner and a launch QA pass. Ask each quote to list deliverables line by line and the range usually collapses.
When is Shopify Plus worth it? Not at ₹5 lakh a month. Usually somewhere past ₹40-50 lakh monthly revenue, or earlier if you need checkout extensibility, B2B pricing tiers, or you're running more than a couple of storefronts. Anyone pitching Plus to a pre-launch brand is selling, not advising.
Where to start
Write down your SKU count, whether you need COD, and your launch date. Those three answers decide the band you're in more than anything else on this page. If you already have a store and suspect you're paying monthly for things you don't use, send it over for a free audit and we'll tell you which apps to kill first.
