Shopify for Jewellery Brands: Live Gold Rates, Hallmarking and Trust at Checkout

Gold prices move daily; Shopify's price field does not. A practitioner's guide to rate-linked pricing, making charge and wastage display, BIS hallmark and HUID, insured shipping and COD limits.

Shopify for Jewellery Brands: Live Gold Rates, Hallmarking and Trust at Checkout

The thing that decides whether a Shopify jewellery store works or turns into a daily data-entry job is the rate. Shopify's price field is a static number. Gold is not. So before you pick a theme or shoot a single product, decide how the price on your product page gets from the morning's spot rate to the cart, and who or what does that every day at 10am. Everything else about selling jewellery online — hallmark display, certificates, insured shipping, a returns policy a buyer will accept before paying ₹80,000 — is solvable with standard Shopify parts. The pricing is where stores break.

How to start a jewellery store on Shopify, in the order that actually works

Merchants usually do this backwards: theme first, photos second, pricing last, and then discover in month two that they are editing 900 prices by hand on Monday mornings.

The order we use:

  1. Split the catalogue by how it is priced. Fixed-price items (silver, fashion, imitation, gold-plated) behave like normal products. Weight-based items (22K and 18K gold, coins, bullion) do not. Two different builds sit on the same store.
  2. Get the product data right. Net weight, gross weight, purity, making charge basis, wastage percentage, stone weight and stone value, HUID, certificate number. These go into metafields, not into the description text where nothing can read them.
  3. Decide the rate source and the refresh cadence. Daily fixed rate at open, or live intraday.
  4. Then the theme, then photography, then payments and shipping.

Step two is the boring one and the one that pays. Once weight and making charge live in structured fields, the price calculation, the rate-breakup table on the product page, the GST invoice line items and your filters all read from the same source.

Live gold rate on Shopify: the arithmetic, and what a stale rate costs

A gold retail price is a formula, not a number:

(rate per gram for that purity × net weight) + wastage + making charge + stone value + GST

Take a 22K chain, net weight 8.420 g, at a rate of ₹6,450 per gram, wastage 6%, making charge 12%.

  • Metal value: 8.420 × 6,450 = ₹54,309
  • Wastage at 6%: ₹3,258.54
  • Making at 12%: ₹6,517.08
  • Subtotal: ₹64,084.62
  • GST at 3%: ₹1,922.54
  • Payable: ₹66,007

Now move the rate ₹80 a gram, which is an ordinary morning. The metal value rises by 8.420 × 80 = ₹673.60. Because wastage and making are percentages of metal value, that ₹673.60 grows by 18% to ₹794.85, and GST takes it to ₹818.70. One chain, one small rate move, ₹819. Sell forty pieces that day on yesterday's rate and you have given away roughly ₹32,750. In the other direction you are simply overpriced against the jeweller down the road, and buyers of gold check the rate before they check your photos.

Three ways to handle it. Fix a rate at market open, publish the timestamp on the product page, and honour it for the day — this is what most physical showrooms do and it is perfectly defensible online. Or reprice continuously from the spot rate. Or, for a small catalogue, quote on WhatsApp and use Shopify only for the payment link, which is a real option and one we have recommended to bullion sellers with fewer than thirty SKUs.

If you want the automated version without a custom build, our Gold & Silver Live Rate app pulls live gold, silver, platinum and palladium rates, reprices products as the rate moves, and renders the metal / making / wastage / GST breakup as a table on the product page. We built it because we kept writing the same scheduled job for jewellery clients.

One thing to get right whichever route you take: lock the rate at the moment the customer reaches checkout and honour that figure. A price that changes between cart and payment is a chargeback waiting to happen.

Making charge and wastage display on the product page

Hiding the breakup is a mistake. Indian gold buyers are used to a printed estimate with each line separated, and a single grand total on a website reads as something to be suspicious of. Show the table.

What belongs on it: purity and net weight, the rate per gram you applied with a timestamp, wastage percentage and amount, making charge with its basis (percentage of metal value or rupees per gram — say which), stone or diamond value listed separately, GST, total. If you charge making per gram rather than as a percentage, that is a selling point on heavier pieces and worth stating plainly.

Two details we see missed constantly. Gross weight versus net weight on stone-set pieces, where the difference is the whole argument. And hallmarking charges, which are per piece and small, but if you pass them on, print them.

BIS hallmark, HUID and certificates: what goes on the PDP

Hallmarked gold jewellery carries three marks — the BIS standard mark, the purity grade, and the six-character alphanumeric HUID. Selling hallmarked gold requires BIS registration as a jeweller, and hallmarking is mandatory in the districts BIS has notified, which now covers most of the country. Silver hallmarking remains voluntary.

On a Shopify jewellery store, that translates to: a HUID metafield on every gold product, surfaced on the product page next to the purity; a macro photograph of the actual hallmark in the image set, not a stock BIS logo; and a line telling the buyer they can verify the HUID themselves in the BIS Care app. Buyers who know to look for the HUID are your best customers. Make it easy for them.

For diamond and gemstone pieces, attach the certificate as a PDF through a file metafield and link it from the product page with the lab name and certificate number in plain text. IGI and GIA numbers are checkable on the labs' own sites. A buyer who can verify the stone before paying is a buyer who does not email you three times first.

Where this gets awkward: made-to-order and per-piece inventory. If each 22K bangle is a unique item with its own weight and HUID, you cannot use one product with size variants. You need one product per piece, which turns 200 designs into 900 SKUs and makes collection filtering essential. That is when custom metafield-driven filtering stops being a nice-to-have.

Rules for selling gold jewellery online in India

Not legal advice, and your CA will have the final word, but these are the things that come up in every build:

  • Hallmarking and BIS registration. As above. Non-hallmarked gold cannot be sold in notified districts.
  • GST. Jewellery sits under HSN 7113. Retailers generally invoice the sale as a composite supply at 3%, with making charges attracting 5% where they are billed as a separate job-work service. Get your invoice format signed off before launch, because Shopify's default order confirmation is not a GST-compliant tax invoice. You will need an invoicing app or a Tally/Zoho sync.
  • Cash limits. Section 269ST bars receiving ₹2 lakh or more in cash in a single transaction. That is a live constraint on COD, not a theoretical one.
  • PAN and KYC. High-value jewellery purchases attract PAN quoting requirements, and jewellers are reporting entities under PMLA for large cash dealings. Digital-only payments simplify this considerably.
  • E-way bills. Gold movement has its own treatment, and a few states have made intra-state e-way bills compulsory for gold consignments. Check your own state's notification rather than assuming the national default.
  • Legal metrology. Net quantity, purity and seller details must be declared. On a website that means the product page carries them, not just the box.

Payments and COD, where gold breaks the default Shopify checkout

Your average order value is 20 to 100 times a typical D2C store's, and every default in the funnel assumes it is not.

UPI carries per-transaction limits that vary by bank and are frequently below a mid-range gold order. Card limits get hit too, and a declined ₹1.4 lakh transaction rarely gets retried. So configure net banking and a bank transfer option properly on Razorpay, PayU or Cashfree, and put no-cost or standard EMI in front of the customer on high-ticket pieces — EMI availability moves conversion on gold more than any discount we have tested.

COD on gold: don't, above a small threshold. Carrier COD terms cap the amount and typically exclude high-value valuables, cash collection runs into the 269ST limit, and the RTO rate on unpaid high-AOV parcels is a business-ending number. The workable pattern is a token advance — ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 booked online against the piece, balance on a payment link before dispatch, or on delivery for lightweight silver only. Say this clearly on the product page rather than letting a customer reach checkout and find COD missing.

Insured shipping and a returns policy a high-AOV buyer will accept

For gold and diamond consignments, use a carrier that specialises in valuables. Sequel Logistics and Brink's serve the Indian jewellery trade and their contracts are written around declared value. Shiprocket, Delhivery and Blue Dart are the right choice for silver, fashion and gold-plated lines where the parcel value is a few thousand rupees, with declared-value insurance added.

Say the insurance out loud on the product page and in the shipping policy: who insures, up to what value, and what happens if a parcel is lost. Buyers spending a lakh want to know before they type a card number, and none of them will email to ask. They will just leave.

On returns, the honest version beats the generous-sounding one. A 7-day return on an unopened, tamper-sealed parcel with the certificate and invoice intact is credible. "No questions asked returns" on a made-to-order engagement ring is not, and everybody reading it knows that. Publish the deduction schedule instead: what you deduct on a return, what you deduct on a buyback or exchange, and whether exchange is at the prevailing rate. A stated 10% deduction reads better than a vague promise. Also: record a packing video for every high-value order and keep it for 90 days. It has settled more disputes for our clients than any policy page.

The best Shopify theme for jewellery, and why it matters less than the photography

Skip the marketplace themes sold as "jewellery themes". They are usually a stock theme with gold-tinted demo images and a slider you will disable in week one. Dawn or Sense will do the job. If you want a paid theme, Prestige suits a luxury catalogue and Impulse merchandises large catalogues better.

The criteria that actually matter for a jewellery store: deep zoom that survives on a phone, product video on the PDP, metafield rendering so the rate breakup and HUID appear without a developer edit each time, a ring-size selector that doesn't multiply into unusable variants, and lead-time messaging for made-to-order pieces.

Then there's weight. Jewellery photography is the heaviest asset class in retail and most of your traffic is a phone on 4G in a tier-2 city. A 3.4 MB hero image on a ₹60,000 product page loses more revenue than a bad theme ever will. We target LCP under 2 seconds on mobile for these stores, which usually means serving images at the size they actually render, deferring the review widget, and killing two of the five apps somebody installed during a trial. Speed work on a jewellery store is not cosmetic; it is the difference between a Meta click that loads and one that bounces at ₹40 a pop.

What a Shopify jewellery website costs in India

Shopify's own subscription is a rounding error next to your inventory — the entry plan sits in the low thousands of rupees a month on annual billing, and Plus is not worth discussing until you are past roughly ₹3 crore a year or you need multiple storefronts.

Build cost splits by pricing model. A fixed-price silver or fashion jewellery store on a good theme, with clean product data, payments, shipping and GST invoicing configured, is a ₹1.2 lakh to ₹3 lakh project. Add live rate-linked pricing with metal, making, wastage and GST breakup, HUID and certificate display, and token-advance checkout, and you are looking at ₹3 lakh to ₹8 lakh depending on catalogue size. Two-way sync with a jewellery ERP such as Logic or Ornate — per-piece stock, weight, HUID flowing both ways — is a separate project again, and the estimate depends entirely on what the ERP will expose. Our cost breakdown goes into the line items.

The cheapest sensible start: launch the fixed-price part of the catalogue, run one app for the gold rate, and defer the ERP integration until order volume justifies it. We have watched merchants spend ₹6 lakh on integration before they had proved anyone would buy a chain from their website.

Three questions we get asked every time

When should the store be ready? Not Diwali. Your peaks are Akshaya Tritiya and Dhanteras, and gold rate volatility around those dates is exactly when a manual pricing process fails. Build in the off-season and be live at least six weeks ahead.

Does WhatsApp still matter if the store handles payment? More than for any other category. Gold is a consultative purchase. Expect buyers to ask for a video of the piece, to negotiate making charges, and to want a human before spending a lakh. Route those conversations properly instead of pretending the checkout will do all the work.

ONDC? Interesting for silver and fashion price points. Largely irrelevant for hallmarked gold today, where trust, certification and insured delivery are the purchase, and a marketplace listing carries none of them.

If you already sell offline and you have the weight, purity and making-charge data sitting in an ERP, the fastest useful move is a data audit before a design brief: pull 50 SKUs, check whether net weight, HUID and making basis are all present and consistent. They usually are not. We do that as part of a free store audit if you would rather have someone else find the gaps.
