Shopify Partner vs Plus Partner: What Select and Plus Tiers Actually Get You

Every agency is a Shopify Partner — the sign-up is free. Here's what Select, Premier and Plus actually change for the merchant: provisioning, escalation, betas, and the rupee maths behind a Plus upgrade.

Shopify Partner vs Plus Partner: What Select and Plus Tiers Actually Get You

Short version: every agency you talk to is a Shopify Partner, because signing up as one is free and takes about ten minutes. The tiers on top of that — Select, Premier, and the older Plus Partner designation — are earned mostly on volume: how much merchant GMV an agency builds and manages, how many Plus launches it has done, and whether its review record holds up. For you as the merchant, the tier changes three practical things: how fast a Plus store gets provisioned and organised, whether there is a human at Shopify who picks up the phone when something breaks in a way the help docs don't cover, and how early your agency sees features that aren't public yet. It does not change what your theme can do, and it does not grant you checkout access. Your plan does that.

So the honest answer to "shopify partner vs plus partner" is that the badge is a proxy for the agency's revenue through Shopify, not a certificate of craft. Useful signal. Not the deciding one.

Shopify partner tiers explained, without the badge marketing

There are really four things people mix together here.

  • Shopify Partner. A free account. It lets you create development stores, earn revenue share, and access partner docs. A student learning Liquid on a Tuesday afternoon is a Shopify Partner.
  • Listed in the Shopify Partner Directory. This is the real first filter. Shopify vets listings, requires a service history, and shows verified merchant reviews on the profile. An agency that can't get listed, or is listed with four reviews, is telling you something.
  • Tiered partner (Select, Premier). Assigned by Shopify based on performance — merchant GMV, launches, retention, review quality. Shopify does not publish the exact thresholds, and they have moved more than once.
  • Plus Partner. Historically a separate program for agencies working on Shopify Plus, with its own agreement and requirements. Shopify has been folding that into the main tiered structure, which is why you'll still see "Plus Partner" on some agency sites and "Premier" on others describing broadly similar standing.

That last point matters when you're comparing two proposals. One agency may lead with a Plus Partner badge and another with Premier, and you cannot rank them from the badges alone. Ask what they launched on Plus in the last twelve months and who did the work.

Shopify Select Partner meaning, in plain terms

Select sits above a plain directory listing and below Premier. We're a Select Partner, so here's what it actually buys us and, by extension, you: a named partner contact at Shopify rather than the general support queue, participation in some early-access programs, and enough standing that when a merchant's Plus provisioning or organisation setup goes sideways, we can escalate it rather than filing a ticket and waiting.

What it does not buy: any special theme capability, any API not available to every other partner, or any discount on your Plus subscription that Shopify sales wouldn't offer anyway. Anyone implying otherwise is selling.

What is a Shopify Plus Partner, and what it does not include

A Plus Partner is an agency Shopify has accepted as competent to build and support Plus merchants — organisation-level admin, expansion stores, B2B, Functions, checkout UI extensions, higher API limits, Launchpad for drops. The designation came with a Plus-specific agreement, access to Plus sandbox environments for building against features a regular development store doesn't expose, and a route into Shopify's Plus merchant success side.

Here is the part that surprises founders. Checkout extensibility is a plan feature, not a partner feature. If you're on Plus, you get the full checkout, thank-you and order-status customisation surface and the Functions that go with payment and delivery customisation, regardless of who builds it. If you're on Advanced, no partner badge in the world unlocks that for you. We've had two or three conversations where a merchant assumed hiring a Plus-badged agency would let them script their checkout on a standard plan. It won't.

Shopify Expert vs Shopify Partner: mostly a renaming

"Shopify Expert" was the name of the old marketplace where merchants found agencies and freelancers. Shopify retired the branding and consolidated everything into the Partner Directory. So when someone asks about the difference between a Shopify Expert and a Shopify Partner, the answer is usually chronology, not capability: Expert was the customer-facing label, Partner is the program, and the directory listing is what both pointed at.

Where it still matters: a few individuals and small studios have long-standing Expert profiles and excellent work but no tier, because tiers reward volume and a three-person studio doing two beautiful Plus builds a year will never out-GMV a 60-person shop churning out Dawn edits. If your project is a single well-built store on a standard plan, that studio may be the better buy.

Is a Plus Partner better than a Shopify Expert?

For a Plus build with multiple regions, B2B alongside D2C, or a migration off Magento or WooCommerce with a five-figure SKU count and legacy URL structure to preserve, yes — you want an agency that has done Plus-scale work and can escalate to Shopify when the platform, not the code, is the problem. That's the whole point of the tier.

For a ₹40 lakh-a-year brand on Shopify Basic that needs faster collection pages and a working COD flow, no. You'll pay for account management you don't need. We say this to people who come to us for a Plus quote and don't need Plus yet, and we lose some of those conversations. Fine.

Do you need a Plus Partner to launch Shopify Plus?

No. You buy Plus from Shopify's sales team directly, or through an agency referral, and either route gets you the same platform at the same negotiated price. There is no gate that requires a partner tier to activate a Plus account.

What a Plus-experienced agency changes is the first six weeks. Organisation admin, store hierarchy and markets need to be decided before you start building, because unpicking them later is genuinely painful. Expansion stores share some things and not others. Customer accounts, B2B company records and price lists behave differently from what you'd guess from the standard admin. We get store-hierarchy decisions wrong on the first pass often enough that we now run a separate structure workshop before any theme work starts, and that workshop is worth more than the badge on the proposal.

The Plus maths, in rupees

Founders ask whether Plus pays for itself on transaction fees. Usually it doesn't, and it's easy to check.

India has no Shopify Payments, so almost everyone runs Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree or similar. That means Shopify's third-party gateway fee applies on top of your gateway's own cut. Take Advanced at 0.5% and Plus at 0.2% — check Shopify's current published rates for your region before you rely on this — and the delta is 0.3% of GMV.

Advanced runs about $399 a month, roughly ₹34,000 at ₹85 to the dollar. Plus starts around $2,300 a month, roughly ₹1,95,000. Add GST on both. The incremental subscription cost is about ₹1,61,000 a month. Divide that by 0.003 and you get ₹5.37 crore. That's the monthly GMV at which the fee saving alone covers the upgrade — about ₹64 crore a year.

Below that, Plus has to earn its keep on capability: checkout customisation, B2B, expansion stores for the UAE or the US, API headroom during a festive drop, staff account limits. Those are real reasons. "We'll save on fees" is not one until you're well past ₹5 crore a month. And note that Shopify Audiences, one of the flashier Plus perks, needs Shopify Payments, so Indian merchants don't get it at all. We walk through this arithmetic on most Plus scoping calls, and a fair share end with the merchant staying on Advanced for another two quarters.

Shopify Partner Directory levels: how agencies climb them

Broadly, Shopify looks at the GMV of stores an agency builds and manages, the number and quality of launches, merchant retention, and the review record on the directory profile. Hit the marks consistently and you move up. Miss them and you can move down, which is the bit agencies don't advertise. Tiers get reassessed.

Because the inputs are volume-weighted, the tier tells you an agency has done a lot of Shopify work and kept enough clients happy to stay listed. It tells you nothing about whether the developer assigned to your build has shipped a Function before, or whether your project will be staffed by the person you met in the pitch. Large tiered agencies are often the worst offenders on that second point.

What to check instead of the badge

Five questions that separate proposals faster than any tier comparison:

  1. Who writes the code, and where do they sit? Names, not roles. Ask to speak to the lead developer for twenty minutes before you sign.
  2. Show me a store you launched in the last six months and tell me what broke. Anyone who says nothing broke is either new or lying.
  3. Read the directory reviews properly. Not the average. The three-star ones, and how the agency replied. Ours sits at 4.8 across 807 reviews and the useful information is in the specifics, not the number.
  4. What happens on day 31 after launch? Retainer scope, response times, who handles a Razorpay webhook failing at 11pm during a sale.
  5. What would you talk me out of? An agency with no answer hasn't thought about your business.

If you're weighing a Plus upgrade or comparing two agency proposals and want a second read on whether the tier difference matters for your build, send us the store and the proposals. A free audit will tell you where the actual constraint is, which in our experience is more often theme weight and catalogue structure than the plan you're on. If it turns out you just need good build hours, a dedicated developer costs a fraction of a Plus programme and solves most of what people bring to us as a platform problem.
