How does a Shopify gold rate app work?
The product stores what the price is made of β net weight, purity, making-charge percentage, wastage percentage and any stone value β as structured fields rather than being a typed number. The app fetches the current spot rate and recalculates each variant's price through Shopify's Admin API on a schedule. The storefront can then show the breakup, so the customer sees how the total was reached instead of being asked to trust it.
How often do prices update?
Hourly on the paid plans. The right cadence for most jewellers is at least as often as their own board rate changes, which is usually twice a day or more. What matters is that a stale price cannot survive into the afternoon, because that is where the margin quietly goes.
Does it handle making charges, wastage and GST?
Yes. Making charge and wastage are held as percentages against each product, stone value as an amount, and GST is applied on top through Shopify's tax settings. The breakup table shows each of those separately, which is both a trust signal and what a customer expects to see from a jeweller.
Can I try it before paying?

Do you also build the jewellery store itself?

The app is one component of that, not the whole answer.
Does it work for silver, platinum and palladium?
Yes, all four metals, at the purities you stock. Silver in particular behaves differently β lower value, higher weight, so shipping cost is a bigger share of the order β and that is worth designing the catalogue around.
