Shopify Developer Rates in Australia: AUD Benchmarks and When Offshore Pays

Australian Shopify rates run AUD 60–140 freelance, 150–220 boutique, 220–350 for Plus agencies. Here's the salary maths behind those numbers, and the two variables that decide whether offshore actually saves you anything.

Shopify Developer Rates in Australia: AUD Benchmarks and When Offshore Pays

Straight to it. Shopify developer rates in Australia sit in three bands: freelancers at AUD 60–140 an hour depending on seniority, boutique agencies at AUD 150–220, and established Plus-level agencies at AUD 220–350. Offshore teams, including ours in Bengaluru, quote roughly AUD 35–75. Those are the ranges we see when Australian merchants send us an existing quote and ask us to price the same scope. The gap looks decisive on paper. It usually isn't, and the reason has nothing to do with code quality.

Why local rates land where they do

A Sydney agency charging $190 an hour is not printing money. Run the arithmetic on a single mid-level developer.

Say the base salary is $120,000 β€” a fair mid-level band for someone who can write Liquid, handle metafields properly and debug a checkout extension. Super is 12% under the guarantee rate, so that's $14,400 on top: $134,400. Payroll tax adds roughly another 5% of wages once your wage bill clears the state threshold, call it $6,000. Laptop, software licences, recruitment amortised, desk space, training, the Shopify Partner tooling: another $12,000 is conservative. You're at about $152,000 before anyone has written a line of code.

Now the billable side. A 38-hour week across 52 weeks is 1,976 hours. Take out four weeks' annual leave, eleven-ish public holidays and a week of sick leave and you're near 1,740. No agency bills 100% of that. Internal standups, scoping calls that don't convert, knowledge transfer, the Thursday afternoon where the theme update broke staging β€” 70% utilisation is a good agency. That leaves about 1,220 billable hours.

$152,000 divided by 1,220 is $124 an hour in raw cost. Add account management, sales, a project manager, rent and a margin that lets the business survive a quiet quarter, and $190 is a normal number rather than a greedy one.

Keep that $124 in mind. It's the floor. Anyone quoting you $90 an hour with an Australian team is either a solo operator with no overhead, or subcontracting offshore and not telling you.

Shopify developer hourly rate in Australia, by who you're actually hiring

  • Offshore agency (India, Philippines, Eastern Europe): AUD 35–75. Wide band because it covers everything from a two-person shop to a Shopify Select Partner with a QA function.
  • Australian freelancer, generalist: $60–$95. Often a designer who learned Liquid, or a developer between contracts.
  • Freelance Shopify developer rates in Sydney and Melbourne, mid to senior: $95–$140. Good ones are booked six to eight weeks out and won't take a two-hour job.
  • Specialist contractor β€” checkout extensibility, Hydrogen, complex ERP integration: $150–$200, sometimes more if they're the only person in the country who has done your exact integration.
  • Boutique agency, three to fifteen people: $150–$220.
  • Large agency or Shopify Plus partner: $220–$350, usually with a minimum engagement attached.

Melbourne and Sydney price within about 10% of each other. Brisbane and Perth run slightly under, though Perth specialists with real Shopify depth can charge Sydney rates because there are fewer of them. Shopify development cost in Melbourne, in practice, is a Sydney quote with a marginally friendlier project manager.

One thing merchants forget: an Australian invoice carries 10% GST, an offshore one generally doesn't. If you're GST-registered you claim that back, so it's a cash-flow difference, not a cost difference. Worth confirming with your accountant, but don't treat the 10% as a saving.

How much it costs to build a Shopify store in Australia

Project pricing, not hourly, because that's how most builds get bought.

$4,000–$9,000 buys a premium theme configured properly. Real product data, Afterpay and Zip live, shipping zones that don't quietly lose money on WA deliveries, a working Australia Post or Sendle rate feed, GST-inclusive pricing displayed the way Australian shoppers expect. No custom design. This is the right spend for most first stores and we say so regularly, including when the merchant arrived asking for something four times bigger.

$12,000–$30,000 is a custom design on a theme foundation. Bespoke homepage and PDP, a proper collection filtering experience, subscription or bundle logic, maybe a wholesale channel. Two to three months elapsed.

$35,000–$90,000+ is a genuine custom build: headless or heavily customised theme architecture, ERP or 3PL integration, multi-currency and multi-region, migration from a legacy platform with redirect mapping and historical order import. If you're moving off Magento or BigCommerce, the data work is usually a third of the budget on its own β€” we break that down in our notes on Shopify migration.

Australian merchants systematically underbudget one line: shipping logic. A flat national rate is a slow leak once regional WA, NT and the Tasmanian routes are in the mix, and rate-by-weight with carrier-calculated fallbacks takes real configuration time. Budget for it.

Shopify maintenance cost in Australia, per month

Retainers cluster into three shapes.

A care plan at $500–$1,200 a month gets you monitoring, backups, small fixes and someone who answers when the theme update breaks a section. Usually a fixed hour allocation, four to eight hours.

$2,000–$5,000 is the working band for a growing D2C brand β€” 15 to 30 hours, split between CRO experiments, new landing pages for campaigns, app integration work and the occasional emergency.

$6,000–$15,000+ buys a part-dedicated team. At this level you should be getting a roadmap, not a ticket queue.

Below $500 a month you're buying insurance, not development. That's a legitimate purchase. Just don't expect a roadmap with it.

Shopify Plus agency rates in Australia, and whether you need Plus

Plus agencies in Australia bill $220–$350 an hour and typically want a minimum of $20,000–$40,000 to start a build. The licence itself is a separate conversation with Shopify and is quoted in USD, usually on a revenue-linked deal.

The unwelcome part: most Australian brands asking about Plus don't need it yet. The features that justify the jump are checkout customisation with Functions, B2B on the same store, Launchpad for timed Click Frenzy and EOFY drops, higher API limits, and multiple expansion stores. If you're doing under roughly $3–4 million a year and your checkout is standard, the transaction rate saving alone won't cover the licence, and the agency rate on top makes it worse. We've told merchants to stay on Advanced and spend the difference on retention. Some of them listened. If you want the comparison run against your actual numbers, our Shopify Plus work page covers where the line genuinely sits.

Offshore versus local: the two variables that actually decide it

The hourly gap is the least useful input. A $50 offshore rate against a $190 local rate looks like a 74% saving, and merchants who buy on that number alone are the ones who come back in eight months having paid twice.

What decides it is retainer size and overlap hours.

Retainer size

Under about AUD 3,000 a month, offshore rarely wins. At that size you're buying tickets from a shared pool, and the coordination cost β€” writing specs precisely enough for someone who has never seen your warehouse, waiting a day for a clarification, reviewing work you can't discuss live β€” eats the rate advantage. A good local freelancer at $120 who already knows your store will out-deliver a cheaper remote team on small, ambiguous work. That's not loyalty to a market, it's how briefing overhead scales.

Above AUD 5,000 a month, the maths flips hard. That buys a named developer plus fractional QA and project management offshore. The same budget locally buys about 26 hours from a boutique agency. Four times the throughput is worth some inconvenience, and at that volume the work is continuous enough to justify a proper onboarding β€” someone learns your product data model, your 3PL quirks, your Afterpay settings, and stops asking.

Overlap hours

This is the one people check last and should check first. India is UTC+5:30. Sydney and Melbourne on daylight saving are UTC+11, so 9am in Melbourne is 3:30am in Bengaluru. Standard time narrows it to 4.5 hours, which still means the natural overlap is your afternoon only. Perth is a different story: AWST is UTC+8, just 2.5 hours ahead of Indian time, so a WA merchant gets most of a working day shared with an Indian team without anybody shifting hours.

For east coast clients we run a shifted start β€” the team is online from early morning IST, which covers the Australian morning. Four solid overlap hours is the threshold in our experience. Below that, every question costs a day and your two-week sprint becomes three. Ask any offshore agency directly: how many hours will my developer be online while my team is? If the answer is vague, the answer is two.

The other thing offshore should never own on day one is anything that touches money or the ACCC. Afterpay and Zip settlement behaviour, GST treatment on imported goods under the A$1,000 low-value threshold, and sustainability or provenance claims on product pages are all local-knowledge territory. Get them specced by someone who lives with those rules, then hand the build across. We do this with Australian clients constantly and it's the split that works: local strategy, offshore execution. More on how we structure that on our Australia page, and on cost structure generally when you hire a Shopify developer in India.

What the Australian calendar does to your dev budget

The seasonal shape here is genuinely different and it changes when you should be spending. Click Frenzy in November, then Black Friday, then a Christmas peak that runs into a summer January β€” that's a code freeze from roughly the first week of November to mid-January. Anything structural has to land by late October or wait. Then EOFY in June is a second real peak, which northern-hemisphere agencies frequently don't plan for at all.

So the sensible build windows are February to April and July to September. Quotes in those months are also easier to negotiate, because every agency in the country is quiet in February.

One more Australian constraint worth pricing in. With a domestic market of under 30 million people, paid acquisition saturates fast and CAC climbs sooner than it does in the US. That pushes development spend toward retention and AOV β€” subscriptions, bundling, post-purchase upsell, a loyalty integration that actually writes back to Klaviyo or Omnisend β€” rather than more landing pages. When we scope Australian retainers, that's usually where the hours go after month three.

Quick answers

What's a Shopify developer's salary in Australia per year? Base salaries we see quoted to us by merchants hiring in-house run $85,000–$110,000 for junior to mid, $120,000–$150,000 for senior, and past $160,000 for someone with genuine Plus and headless experience in Sydney. Add 12% super and load it with payroll tax, leave and tooling: the true cost is about 25–30% above base.

Is it cheaper to hire in-house than use an agency? Only above roughly $8,000–$10,000 a month of sustained work, and only if you can keep one person busy with Shopify specifically. Most brands can't. They end up with a developer doing email templates and spreadsheet exports at $140,000 a year.

Do offshore agencies charge in AUD? We invoice Australian clients in AUD or USD, whichever they prefer. Fix the rate in the contract β€” a 5% FX move across a six-month project is not hypothetical.

What should I never offshore? The first two weeks of discovery, and anything where a wrong answer creates a compliance problem. Everything else is fair game if the overlap holds.

If you've got a quote in hand and you're not sure whether the hours are honest, send it over with your store URL. We'll re-scope it line by line and tell you where it's padded, including the parts we'd price the same. A free audit takes about a week.
