If your metro-to-non-metro courier cutoff has already gone and Diwali lands on 8 November, stop trying to rescue physical delivery and move your homepage to gift cards today. Shopify gift cards sit on every plan, they issue instantly, they carry no shipping risk, and they let you keep selling at full price for the three days when your competitors are knocking 40% off stock they can no longer deliver on time. The setup is about ninety minutes of work. The merchandising is maybe twenty.
What follows is the version we run with clients when the calendar beats the warehouse.
The arithmetic: a gift card beats a panic discount
Run your own numbers, but here's the shape of it. Take a ₹3,200 basket at 55% gross margin, so ₹1,440 of COGS.
- Sell that stock at 35% off to clear it before Diwali: revenue ₹2,080, gross profit ₹640.
- Sell a ₹2,500 gift card now, redeemed later against the same ₹3,200 order at full price: you collect ₹2,500 today, ₹700 at redemption, and book ₹1,760 of gross profit.
Same stock. Nearly three times the profit. And the gift card buyer is usually not the person who redeems it, which means you acquire a second customer at zero media cost.
One caution: plan as if every card gets redeemed. Breakage is real but it is not yours to forecast, and if you build your November cash plan on cards nobody uses, you will be short in January when they all turn up at once.
How to sell gift cards on Shopify in India without breaking anything
In the admin, go to Products, then Gift cards, and create a gift card product. Give it four or five fixed denominations as variants — ₹1,000, ₹2,500, ₹5,000, ₹10,000 is a sane ladder for most D2C catalogues — and skip the open-value field if you are in a hurry, because custom amounts need a theme change or an app.
Three things that matter specifically in India:
Turn COD off for gift card orders. This is the one people miss. A cash-on-delivery gift card is a contradiction: there is nothing to deliver and nothing to collect against. Worse, your RTO pattern on COD does not apply here, so you cannot even model the loss. Hide COD when a gift card is in the cart using a payment customization function or one of the free apps that do rule-based payment hiding. If you cannot get that live in time, set the gift card product's description to say prepaid only and refund any COD orders manually.
Check UPI intent is actually firing on mobile. Almost all of this volume arrives on a phone. If your Razorpay, Cashfree or PayU checkout is defaulting to a card form instead of a UPI app handoff, you will leak buyers at the exact moment they are in a hurry. Test it on your own phone, on mobile data, not on office Wi-Fi.
Make sure your notification emails authenticate. Shopify sends the gift card code by email. If your sending domain has no SPF and DKIM records set up, a meaningful slice of those codes lands in spam or Promotions, and you will spend Diwali resending them from the admin. Fix the DNS records before you turn the campaign on.
Scheduled gift card delivery on Shopify, and where it trips up
Shopify's gift card product supports recipient details at checkout — name, email address, a personal message, and a send date. The buyer pays on the 6th, the recipient gets the card on the morning of the 8th. That is the whole feature, and it is free.
Two gotchas. First, the recipient form is a theme block. Dawn-based themes carry it; older Online Store 2.0 themes and anything vintage may need the block added to the product template. Check on a live product page right now rather than assuming. Second, buyers mistype recipient email addresses constantly. Add a line on the product page telling them to double-check, and keep the admin open on Diwali morning so you can resend a code when someone emails you in a panic.
If your theme will not cooperate and you have no developer on hand, the fallback is to sell the card to the buyer's own inbox and let them forward it. Less elegant. Works at 11pm on the 7th.
Getting a digital gift voucher onto WhatsApp
WhatsApp is where this gift actually gets handed over in India, so it is worth saying plainly: Shopify does not send gift cards over WhatsApp natively, and you will not get a new message template approved, tested and wired to a BSP in the next 48 hours. Meta's template review alone can eat a day.
The realistic play before Diwali is to make the card shareable rather than automate the send. Design a simple 1080×1080 card image, put the code and redemption link on the order confirmation page and in the email, and tell the buyer to screenshot or forward it. People already do this. You are just removing friction.
The proper build — Shopify Flow triggering on a paid order containing a gift card line item, posting to a WhatsApp Business API provider, delivering the code as a template message with a redemption button — is a good investment for next year's festive run and for birthdays and anniversaries all year. It is a custom app and Flow job, not a weekend hack, and it needs template approval in hand before the season starts.
Merchandising gift cards on your homepage when the clock is the offer
The moment your cutoff passes, the hero image promising Diwali delivery becomes a liability. Swap it.
What we change, in order of impact on a mobile-first store:
- Announcement bar: state the cutoff has passed and that gift cards arrive instantly. Honesty here prevents the support queue from melting.
- Hero: one image, one line, one button straight to the gift card product. Not a carousel. Carousels lose on phones.
- A gift card tile in the first collection row, above the fold on a 6-inch screen.
- Cart drawer upsell: a ₹1,000 card as an add-on for anyone already buying.
- Product pages for anything that can no longer ship in time: a line under the add-to-cart saying it ships after Diwali, with a link to the card.
Resist installing a countdown timer app at this point in the season. You are adding third-party script weight to a storefront that is about to take its heaviest traffic of the year, on connections that are often 4G in a crowded market. If you want to know what your homepage actually weighs before you touch it, SwiftStore will scan it and tell you, or read our notes on Shopify speed work once the season is over.
GST treatment of gift vouchers for Indian ecommerce
Shopify does not charge tax when a gift card is purchased. Tax is applied to the order the card is later redeemed against, where the card functions as a payment method. That behaviour lines up with how vouchers are treated under GST: the sale of the voucher itself is not the taxable event, the supply of the underlying goods is. The GST Council clarified the position on vouchers in late 2024, which settled a long-running argument about whether a voucher was goods, services or neither.
For your books, the cash you take on a gift card is a liability, not revenue, until it is redeemed. Map it to a deferred revenue or gift card liability ledger in Tally or Zoho Books and reconcile against Shopify's outstanding gift card balance report each month. If you skip this, your November revenue looks inflated and your accountant finds out in Q4.
Run the specifics past your CA. The treatment is clear enough at a principle level, but your ledger mapping is yours.
Expiry: just don't
Shopify lets you set an expiry date on a gift card and blocks it in jurisdictions where expiry is not permitted. Single-brand, closed-loop cards that can only be spent in your own store sit outside the RBI's prepaid payment instrument authorisation regime, so the one-year minimum validity applied to PPIs is not the constraint most merchants think it is.
None of which matters as much as the practical point. An expired Diwali gift card generates a furious customer, a refund you grant anyway, and a review. Leave expiry blank. If you must set one, make it no less than 24 months and say so on the product page in plain language.
Last-minute gifting that is not a gift card
Gift cards are the fastest fix, not the only one. Depending on your category:
Hyperlocal same-day in the metros. Shiprocket Quick, Porter, Borzo and Shadowfax can move a parcel inside a city on the day. Margins are thin and the radius is small, but for Bengaluru, Delhi NCR, Mumbai and Hyderabad buyers it converts. Gate it by pincode so you are not promising Pune delivery from a Chennai warehouse.
Gift the card now, ship the thing later. Sell a physical bundle at full price with an honest "dispatches 10 November" promise and a printable card the buyer can hand over on the day. We've seen this hold up well for categories where the gift is obviously a considered purchase rather than an impulse.
Digital-first SKUs. Consultations, styling sessions, workshop slots, subscription credits. If you already sell any of these, they need no courier at all.
The hour the cutoff passes: a checklist
- Update shipping policy and any delivery-estimate text on product pages. Stale estimates generate chargebacks.
- Pause or rewrite Meta and Google ad copy that mentions Diwali delivery. A disapproval is cheaper than a complaint.
- Switch the hero and announcement bar to gift cards.
- Send one email and one WhatsApp broadcast to your existing list. Your retention list buys gift cards at a far better rate than cold traffic.
- Confirm gift card emails are landing in the inbox. Send one to a Gmail address you own and check.
- Decide what happens to unsold festive stock after the 8th, and do not decide it at 2am on the 7th.
If your theme is missing the recipient block or you need COD suppressed on gift card orders before the weekend, that is a few hours of work for someone who knows the codebase — our developers take these on at short notice during the festive run. If the season is already lost and you'd rather fix the structural problems before next Diwali, start with a free store audit in the quiet week after.
