Bengaluru Shopify Developer Rates: In-House vs Freelance vs Agency

Freelance ₹600–₹1,500/hr, agency ₹1,200–₹3,000/hr, in-house around ₹1,052/hr once you load PF, gratuity and a seat. The real arithmetic behind hiring a Shopify developer in Bengaluru, TDS and GST included.

Bengaluru Shopify Developer Rates: In-House vs Freelance vs Agency

Short answer: in Bengaluru, a competent freelance Shopify developer charges ₹600–₹1,500 an hour, an agency bills ₹1,200–₹3,000 an hour depending on seniority and scope, and an in-house mid-level developer costs you roughly ₹1,05,000–₹1,30,000 a month once you load salary with PF, gratuity, insurance, a seat and the recruiter's fee. Those are the three real numbers behind the cost to hire a Shopify developer in Bangalore. Everything else is which risk you want to own.

We've hired for all three models and we've been the agency on the invoice. Here's how the arithmetic actually works, including the tax bits most founders forget until their CA asks.

Shopify developer hourly rates in Bengaluru, by tier

Rates cluster by what someone can actually do, not by years on a CV.

  • ₹300–₹500/hr. Theme settings, product uploads, basic Liquid edits from a tutorial. Fine for catalogue work. Will break your cart if asked to touch checkout extensibility.
  • ₹600–₹1,000/hr. Solid Liquid, metafields and metaobjects, section-based theme work, Razorpay or Cashfree configuration, Shiprocket and Delhivery integrations through existing apps. This is where most good freelancers in the city sit.
  • ₹1,200–₹2,000/hr. Custom app work, Admin and Storefront API, webhooks, GST-compliant invoicing logic, bulk operations, performance work that survives a Diwali traffic spike.
  • ₹2,500–₹4,000/hr. Shopify Plus territory: Functions, checkout UI extensions, B2B catalogues, multi-store with separate GSTINs, headless. Billed by agencies, not individuals, because one person rarely holds all of it.

A freelancer quoting ₹250/hr for "full Shopify development" is not a bargain. They're usually a theme installer who hasn't yet met a store with 12,000 SKUs and a COD filter rule.

Shopify developer salary in Bengaluru, and what it actually costs you

Offered CTC for Shopify-focused developers in the city, based on what we see when we're hiring against other companies:

  • Junior, 0–2 years: ₹3.5–6 lakh a year
  • Mid, 2–5 years, confident in Liquid and the Admin API: ₹8–14 lakh
  • Senior, 5+ years, has shipped public apps or Plus builds: ₹18–28 lakh

Bengaluru pays more at the senior end than Kochi or Coimbatore, and the reason has nothing to do with Shopify. It's that a senior JavaScript developer here has SaaS product companies bidding for the same hours. You're not paying a Shopify premium. You're paying a Koramangala-adjacent opportunity-cost premium.

Now the number nobody puts in the budget. Take a mid developer at ₹12 lakh CTC, so ₹1,00,000 a month on paper. Employer PF on a ₹50,000 basic is ₹6,000. Gratuity accrual at 4.81% of basic is about ₹2,400. Group health insurance, roughly ₹1,500. Desk, laptop amortised, internet, tooling: call it ₹8,000 in Bengaluru. That's ₹1,17,900. Add a recruiter fee at 8.33% of CTC, which is ₹1,00,000 once, spread over twelve months: ₹8,300. You're at ₹1,26,200 a month.

Then divide by hours that produce work. Twenty-one working days at eight hours is 168. Strip out leave, standups, Slack, the week they're onboarding and the fortnight they're interviewing elsewhere, and 120 billable-equivalent hours a month is an honest figure. ₹1,26,200 ÷ 120 = ₹1,052 an hour.

So the in-house developer you hired to save money costs about the same per hour as a good freelancer and sometimes more than a mid-tier agency rate. The difference is that you own their idle time, and idle time is only wasteful if you don't have enough work to fill it.

Freelance Shopify developer charges in Bangalore, and the TDS you owe

Freelancers price three ways: hourly, per deliverable, or a monthly block of hours. The block is usually the best deal. Expect ₹35,000–₹70,000 a month for 20–30 hours of a mid-level person's attention, which is enough to keep a store healthy but not enough to build anything new.

Two tax things that catch founders out.

TDS. Professional or technical services to an individual fall under Section 194J, and you deduct 10% before paying. On an ₹80,000 invoice you remit ₹72,000 to the developer and ₹8,000 to the government by the 7th of the following month, then file your 26Q and issue a Form 16A each quarter. It isn't extra cost, it's cash flow and paperwork. But if you skip it, the expense can be disallowed and you've handed your auditor a problem. Plenty of freelancers will ask you not to deduct. Deduct anyway.

GST. A freelancer below the ₹20 lakh services threshold won't be registered and won't charge GST. Looks cheaper. It is cheaper only if you're not GST-registered yourself. If you are, the 18% on a registered vendor's invoice comes back to you as input credit against your output GST, so it's a wash. Compare ex-GST numbers or you'll compare the wrong thing.

The real freelance risk isn't price. It's the single point of failure. A freelancer who goes quiet in the second week of October, when you're pushing Meta spend into the festive run-up and your COD orders are piling into Delhivery, has cost you more than the delta on their rate. We've inherited that store more than once. The handover is always worse than the client expects, because there's no documentation and the theme has seventeen untracked edits in theme.liquid.

What a Shopify development company in Bengaluru costs

Agency pricing comes in three shapes.

Fixed-scope projects. A premium theme set up properly with a real catalogue, payment gateway, shipping rules and GST invoicing: ₹60,000–₹1,50,000. A custom theme built from Dawn with bespoke sections and a designed PDP: ₹2,50,000–₹8,00,000. A migration from WooCommerce or Magento with URL mapping, customer passwords and order history: ₹1,50,000–₹6,00,000, driven almost entirely by data mess rather than design. A Plus build with Functions and checkout extensions starts around ₹10 lakh and goes up.

Retainers. ₹50,000–₹90,000 a month buys a shared pool of 25–40 hours, which suits a store doing steady revenue and shipping small improvements. ₹1,25,000–₹2,50,000 buys a dedicated developer plus QA and account management. A pod with a developer, a designer and a CRO lead sits above ₹3,00,000.

Hourly, for odd jobs. ₹1,200–₹3,000, usually with a minimum block.

Add 18% GST on every agency invoice in India. Claim it back. If you're buying from an agency outside India for an Indian entity, read up on reverse charge before you assume you've saved money.

Full ranges by project type are broken out on our Shopify development cost page, which we keep current rather than rewriting twice a year.

A worked comparison: one 160-hour build

Say you need a new theme, a Razorpay and COD setup with a pincode-based COD block, Shiprocket integration, and a bulk product import from an old Magento store. Call it 160 hours of real work.

  • Freelancer at ₹900/hr: ₹1,44,000. You deduct ₹14,400 TDS. Your own time managing it: roughly 20 hours. Risk of a 3–4 week slip: high, because one person gets sick or takes a better-paying gig.
  • Agency at ₹1,800/hr: ₹2,88,000 plus GST, net ₹2,88,000 after input credit. Includes QA, a staging store, a rollback plan and someone answering on a Sunday in October. Your time: 6–8 hours.
  • In-house at ₹1,052/hr loaded: ₹1,68,320, but only if the developer is already on the payroll and otherwise idle. If you hire for this project, add 6–8 weeks of recruitment and a notice period before line one of Liquid gets written.

The gap between freelance and agency is ₹1,44,000. That's the price of delivery certainty. On a store doing ₹15 lakh a month, four weeks of slip through the festive window costs more than the gap. On a store doing ₹2 lakh a month in a flat quarter, it doesn't, and the freelancer is the correct choice. Say so out loud before you sign anything.

Does Bengaluru charge more than the rest of India?

For agency rates, barely. We bill the same hourly from Bengaluru as good shops bill from Mumbai, Delhi NCR or Ahmedabad, within about 10%. Kerala and Coimbatore run maybe 15–20% lower on comparable quality, and if you're comfortable working entirely over calls, that's genuine money saved.

For freelancers, remote work flattened the market years ago. Someone in Jaipur with the same skill charges the same as someone in HSR Layout, because you're both hiring from the same Upwork and LinkedIn pool.

Where the city genuinely costs more is in-house salaries, for the reason above. If your plan is to build an internal team, Bengaluru is the most expensive place in India to do it and also the easiest place to actually find people. Pick your constraint.

Anyone selling you a "Bangalore premium" on agency hours is selling you a postcode. We've written more about how we work locally on our Bengaluru page, but the pricing logic doesn't change with geography.

Cheap Shopify developers for small businesses: when it's the right call

If you're doing under ₹3 lakh a month in revenue, running a premium theme and a handful of apps, do not hire an agency. You don't have the problems an agency solves. Buy a good theme, pay a freelancer ₹25,000–₹45,000 to configure it properly, set up Razorpay and Shiprocket yourself, and spend the saved money on Meta ads and better product photography.

Where cheap goes wrong is custom code. A ₹15,000 "custom feature" from a ₹300/hr developer usually arrives as a script pasted into theme.liquid that loads jQuery on every page and adds 400ms to your LCP on a 4G phone in a tier-2 city, which is where most of your traffic is. Fixing that later costs more than building it right. We charge for that cleanup regularly and it's never fun to quote.

Rough threshold: below ₹5 lakh monthly revenue, freelance. Between ₹5 lakh and ₹40 lakh, a retainer with an agency or a part-time senior. Above that, in-house plus an agency for the heavy builds.

What actually moves the quote

Scope descriptions are vague, so here's what makes a Shopify quote in India jump:

  • COD logic. Pincode serviceability, order value caps, OTP verification at checkout, RTO-risk scoring. This is custom work almost every time and it's the single most common reason an Indian Shopify project goes over estimate.
  • GST invoicing. Shopify's native tax handling doesn't produce a compliant Indian invoice with HSN codes and a GSTIN out of the box. You're either buying an app or building the integration.
  • Migration data quality. Clean CSVs are cheap. A Magento store with configurable products, three price lists and eight years of orders is not.
  • Catalogue size. Past about 2,000 SKUs, collection filtering and search become a build decision rather than a setting.
  • Speed. Getting an Indian D2C store from a 3.5s LCP down under 2s on mobile is usually 30–60 hours of app audit, image handling and script deferral. Worth it before you spend another rupee on Meta.

Common questions, answered once

What's a fair hourly rate for a Shopify expert in Bengaluru? ₹600–₹1,500 freelance, ₹1,200–₹3,000 through an agency. Below ₹500 you're buying configuration, not development.

What does a monthly Shopify retainer cost in India? ₹35,000–₹70,000 for a freelancer's block of hours. ₹50,000–₹90,000 for a small agency retainer. ₹1,25,000–₹2,50,000 for a dedicated developer. Check what's counted: some retainers bill meetings and some don't.

Can I hire a Shopify developer part-time? Yes, and for most stores under ₹20 lakh a month it's the right structure. Twenty hours of a senior beats forty hours of a junior. We do this through dedicated developer engagements where the developer sits with your team but stays on our payroll, which removes the hiring lead time and the PF paperwork.

Should I pay a fixed price or hourly? Fixed price for anything well-defined: a migration, a theme build, an integration with a known API. Hourly for discovery, ongoing optimisation and anything where you'll change your mind. Fixed price on a vague brief means the agency has padded it, and they should have.

Do I need Shopify Plus? Almost certainly not until you're above roughly ₹4–5 crore annual GMV or you need checkout customisation that Functions can't do on Advanced. The Plus fee plus the development to use it properly is real money. Spend it on traffic first.

Before you book a call with anyone

Get three quotes with the same written scope, ask each one how they'd handle COD verification and GST invoices specifically, and ask who owns the code if you leave. The answers will separate them faster than the rates will.

If you want a second opinion on what your current store actually needs before you spend anything, our free store audit covers speed, checkout flow and the app stack, and tells you plainly which items are worth paying a developer for and which you can fix yourself in an afternoon.
